He had artfully presented h<strong>is</strong> side of the question, employingsoph<strong>is</strong>try and fraud to secure h<strong>is</strong> objects. H<strong>is</strong> power to deceive was verygreat, and by d<strong>is</strong>gu<strong>is</strong>ing himself in a cloak of falsehood he had gained anadvantage. Even the loyal angels could not fully d<strong>is</strong>cern h<strong>is</strong> character or seeto what h<strong>is</strong> work was leading.Satan had been so highly honored, and all h<strong>is</strong> acts were so clothed withmystery, that it was difficult to d<strong>is</strong>close to the angels the true nature of h<strong>is</strong>work. Until fully developed, sin would not appear the evil thing it was.Heretofore it had had no place in the universe of God, and holy beings hadno conception of its nature and malignity. <strong>The</strong>y could not d<strong>is</strong>cern theterrible consequences that would result from setting aside the divine law.Satan had, at first, concealed h<strong>is</strong> work under a specious profession ofloyalty to God. He claimed to be seeking to promote the honor of God, thestability of H<strong>is</strong> government, and the good of all the inhabitants of heaven.While instilling d<strong>is</strong>content into the minds of the angels under him, he hadartfully made it appear that he was seeking to remove d<strong>is</strong>sat<strong>is</strong>faction. Whenhe urged that changes be made in the order and laws of God's government,it was under the pretense that these were necessary in order to preserveharmony in heaven.In H<strong>is</strong> dealing with sin, God could employ only righteousness and truth.Satan could use what God could not– flattery and deceit. He had sought tofalsify the word of God and had m<strong>is</strong>represented H<strong>is</strong> plan of governmentbefore the angels, claiming that God was not just in laying laws and rulesupon the inhabitants of heaven; that in requiring subm<strong>is</strong>sion and obediencefrom H<strong>is</strong> creatures, He was seeking merely the exaltation of Himself.<strong>The</strong>refore it must be demonstrated before the inhabitants of heaven, as wellas of all the worlds, that God's government was just, H<strong>is</strong> law perfect. Satanhad made it appear that he himself was seeking to promote the good of theuniverse. <strong>The</strong> true character of the usurper, and h<strong>is</strong> real object, must beunderstood by all. He must have time to manifest himself by h<strong>is</strong> wickedworks.<strong>The</strong> d<strong>is</strong>cord which h<strong>is</strong> own course had caused in heaven, Satan chargedupon the law and government of God. All evil he declared to be the result ofthe divine admin<strong>is</strong>tration.
