392Conformity to worldly customs converts the church to the world; it neverconverts the world to Chr<strong>is</strong>t. Familiarity with sin will inevitably cause it toappear less repulsive. He who chooses to associate with the servants ofSatan will soon cease to fear their master. When in the way of duty we arebrought into trial, as was Daniel in the king's court, we may be sure thatGod will protect us; but if we place ourselves under temptation we shall fallsooner or later.<strong>The</strong> tempter often works most successfully through those who are leastsuspected of being under h<strong>is</strong> control. <strong>The</strong> possessors of talent and educationare admired and honored, as if these qualities could atone for the absence ofthe fear of God or entitle men to H<strong>is</strong> favor. Talent and culture, considered inthemselves, are gifts of God; but when these are made to supply the place ofpiety, when, instead of bringing the soul nearer to God, they lead away fromHim, then they become a curse and a snare. <strong>The</strong> opinion prevails with manythat all which appears like courtesy or refinement must, in some sense,pertain to Chr<strong>is</strong>t. Never was there a greater m<strong>is</strong>take. <strong>The</strong>se qualities shouldgrace the character of every Chr<strong>is</strong>tian, for they would exert a powerfulinfluence in favor of true religion; but they must be consecrated to God, orthey also are a power for evil. Many a man of cultured intellect and pleasantmanners, who would not stoop to what <strong>is</strong> commonly regarded as animmoral act, <strong>is</strong> but a pol<strong>is</strong>hed instrument in the hands of Satan. <strong>The</strong>insidious, deceptive character of h<strong>is</strong> influence and example renders him amore dangerous enemy to the cause of Chr<strong>is</strong>t than are those who areignorant and uncultured.By earnest prayer and dependence upon God, Solomon obtained thew<strong>is</strong>dom which excited the wonder and admiration of the world. But whenhe turned from the Source of h<strong>is</strong> strength, and went forward relying uponhimself, he fell a prey to temptation. <strong>The</strong>n the marvelous powers bestowedon th<strong>is</strong> w<strong>is</strong>est of kings only rendered him a more effective agent of theadversary of souls.While Satan <strong>is</strong> constantly seeking to blind their minds to the fact, letChr<strong>is</strong>tians never forget that they "wrestle not against flesh and blood, butagainst principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness ofth<strong>is</strong> world, against wicked spirits in high places." Ephesians 6:12, margin.<strong>The</strong> inspired warning <strong>is</strong> sounding down the centuries to our time: "Be sober,be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walkethabout, seeking whom he may devour." 1 Peter 5:8.
