"Because thouhast kept the word of My patience, I also will keep thee" (verse 10), <strong>is</strong> theSaviour's prom<strong>is</strong>e. He would sooner send every angel out of heaven toprotect H<strong>is</strong> people than leave one soul that trusts in Him to be overcome bySatan.<strong>The</strong> prophet Isaiah brings to view the fearful deception which will comeupon the wicked, causing them to count themselves secure from thejudgments of God: "We have made a covenant with death, and with hell arewe at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shallnot come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehoodhave we hid ourselves." Isaiah 28:15. In the class here described areincluded those who in their stubborn impenitence comfort themselves withthe assurance that there <strong>is</strong> to be no pun<strong>is</strong>hment for the sinner; that allmankind, it matters not how corrupt, are to be exalted to heaven, to becomeas the angels of God. But still more emphatically are those making acovenant with death and an agreement with hell, who renounce the truthswhich Heaven has provided as a defense for the righteous in the day oftrouble, and accept the refuge of lies offered by Satan in its stead–thedelusive pretensions of spiritual<strong>is</strong>m.Marvelous beyond expression <strong>is</strong> the blindness of the people of th<strong>is</strong>generation. Thousands reject the word of God as unworthy of belief andwith eager confidence receive the deceptions of Satan. Skeptics and scoffersdenounce the bigotry of those who contend for the faith of prophets andapostles, and they divert themselves by holding up to ridicule the solemndeclarations of the Scriptures concerning Chr<strong>is</strong>t and the plan of salvation,and the retribution to be v<strong>is</strong>ited upon the rejecters of the truth. <strong>The</strong>y affectgreat pity for minds so narrow, weak, and superstitious as to acknowledgethe claims of God and obey the requirements of H<strong>is</strong> law. <strong>The</strong>y manifest asmuch assurance as if, indeed, they had made a covenant with death and anagreement with hell– as if they had erected an impassable, impenetrablebarrier between themselves and the vengeance of God. Nothing can arousetheir fears. So fully have they yielded to the tempter, so closely are theyunited with him, and so thoroughly imbued with h<strong>is</strong> spirit, that they have nopower and no inclination to break away from h<strong>is</strong> snare.Satan has long been preparing for h<strong>is</strong> final effort to deceive the world. <strong>The</strong>foundation of h<strong>is</strong> work was laid by the assurance given to Eve in Eden: "Yeshall not surely die."
