272Persecution in the First CenturiesWhen Jesus revealed to H<strong>is</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples the fate of Jerusalem and the scenes ofthe second advent, He foretold also the experience of H<strong>is</strong> people from thetime when He should be taken from them, to H<strong>is</strong> return in power and gloryfor their deliverance. From Olivet the Saviour beheld the storms about tofall upon the apostolic church; and penetrating deeper into the future, H<strong>is</strong>eye d<strong>is</strong>cerned the fierce, wasting tempests that were to beat upon H<strong>is</strong>followers in the coming ages of darkness and persecution. In a few briefutterances of awful significance He foretold the portion which the rulers ofth<strong>is</strong> world would mete out to the church of God. Matthew 24:9, 21, 22. <strong>The</strong>followers of Chr<strong>is</strong>t must tread the same path of humiliation, reproach, andsuffering which their Master trod. <strong>The</strong> enmity that burst forth against theworld's Redeemer would be manifested against all who should believe onH<strong>is</strong> name.<strong>The</strong> h<strong>is</strong>tory of the early church testified to the fulfillment of the Saviour'swords. <strong>The</strong> powers of earth and hell arrayed themselves against Chr<strong>is</strong>t inthe person of H<strong>is</strong> followers. Pagan<strong>is</strong>m foresaw that should the gospeltriumph, her temples and altars would be swept away; therefore shesummoned her forces to destroy Chr<strong>is</strong>tianity. <strong>The</strong> fires of persecution werekindled. Chr<strong>is</strong>tians were stripped of their possessions and driven from theirhomes. <strong>The</strong>y "endured a great fight of afflictions." Hebrews 10:32. <strong>The</strong>y"had trial of cruel ings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds andimpr<strong>is</strong>onment." Hebrews 11:36. <strong>Great</strong> numbers sealed their testimony withtheir blood. Noble and slave, rich and poor, learned and ignorant, were alikeslain without mercy.<strong>The</strong>se persecutions, beginning under Nero about the time of the martyrdomof Paul, continued with greater or less fury for centuries. Chr<strong>is</strong>tians werefalsely accused of the most dreadful crimes and declared to be the cause ofgreat calamities–famine, pestilence, and earthquake. As they became theobjects of popular hatred and suspicion, informers stood ready, for the sakeof gain, to betray the innocent. <strong>The</strong>y were condemned as rebels against theempire, as foes of religion, and pests to society. <strong>Great</strong> numbers were thrownto wild beasts or burned alive in the amphitheaters. Some were crucified;others were covered with the skins of wild animals and thrust into the arena
