516It <strong>is</strong> now evident to all that the wages of sin <strong>is</strong> not noble independence andeternal life, but slavery, ruin, and death. <strong>The</strong> wicked see what they haveforfeited by their life of rebellion. <strong>The</strong> far more exceeding and eternalweight of glory was desp<strong>is</strong>ed when offered them; but how desirable it nowappears. "All th<strong>is</strong>," cries the lost soul, "I might have had; but I chose to putthese things far from me. Oh, strange infatuation! I have exchanged peace,happiness, and honor for wretchedness, infamy, and despair." All see thattheir exclusion from heaven <strong>is</strong> just. By their lives they have declared: "Wewill not have th<strong>is</strong> Man [Jesus] to reign over us."As if entranced, the wicked have looked upon the coronation of the Son ofGod. <strong>The</strong>y see in H<strong>is</strong> hands the tables of the divine law, the statutes whichthey have desp<strong>is</strong>ed and transgressed. <strong>The</strong>y witness the outburst of wonder,rapture, and adoration from the saved; and as the wave of melody sweepsover the multitudes without the city, all with one voice exclaim, "<strong>Great</strong> andmarvelous are Thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are Thy ways,Thou King of saints" (Revelation 15:3); and, falling prostrate, they worshipthe Prince of life.Satan seems paralyzed as he beholds the glory and majesty of Chr<strong>is</strong>t. Hewho was once a covering cherub remembers whence he has fallen. Ashining seraph, "son of the morning;" how changed, how degraded! Fromthe council where once he was honored, he <strong>is</strong> forever excluded. He seesanother now standing near to the Father, veiling H<strong>is</strong> glory. He has seen thecrown placed upon the head of Chr<strong>is</strong>t by an angel of lofty stature andmajestic presence, and he knows that the exalted position of th<strong>is</strong> angelmight have been h<strong>is</strong>.Memory recalls the home of h<strong>is</strong> innocence and purity, the peace and contentthat were h<strong>is</strong> until he indulged in murmuring against God, and envy ofChr<strong>is</strong>t. H<strong>is</strong> accusations, h<strong>is</strong> rebellion, h<strong>is</strong> deceptions to gain the sympathyand support of the angels, h<strong>is</strong> stubborn pers<strong>is</strong>tence in making no effort forself-recovery when God would have granted him forgiveness –all comevividly before him. He reviews h<strong>is</strong> work among men and its results–theenmity of man toward h<strong>is</strong> fellow man, the terrible destruction of life, ther<strong>is</strong>e and fall of kingdoms, the overturning of thrones, the long succession oftumults, conflicts, and revolutions. He recalls h<strong>is</strong> constant efforts to opposethe work of Chr<strong>is</strong>t and to sink man lower and lower. He sees that h<strong>is</strong> hell<strong>is</strong>hplots have been powerless to destroy those who have put their trust in Jesus.As Satan looks upon h<strong>is</strong> kingdom, the fruit of h<strong>is</strong> toil, he sees only failureand ruin. He has led the multitudes to believe that the City of God would be
