Notwithstanding the general abhorrence withwhich it was regarded, even in Catholic countries, th<strong>is</strong> terrible tribunal wasagain set up by pop<strong>is</strong>h rulers, and atrocities too terrible to bear the light ofday were repeated in its secret dungeons. In many countries, thousandsupon thousands of the very flower of the nation, the purest and noblest, themost intellectual and highly educated, pious and devoted pastors,industrious and patriotic citizens, brilliant scholars, talented art<strong>is</strong>ts, skillfulart<strong>is</strong>ans, were slain or forced to flee to other lands.Such were the means which Rome had invoked to quench the light of theReformation, to withdraw from men the Bible, and to restore the ignoranceand superstition of the Dark Ages. But under God's blessing and the laborsof those noble men whom He had ra<strong>is</strong>ed up to succeed Luther,Protestant<strong>is</strong>m was not overthrown. Not to the favor or arms of princes wasit to owe its strength. <strong>The</strong> smallest countries, the humblest and leastpowerful nations, became its strongholds. It was little Geneva in the midstof mighty foes plotting her destruction; it was Holland on her sandbanks bythe northern sea, wrestling against the tyranny of Spain, then the greatestand most opulent of kingdoms; it was bleak, sterile Sweden, that gainedvictories for the Reformation.For nearly thirty years Calvin labored at Geneva, first to establ<strong>is</strong>h there achurch adhering to the morality of the Bible, and then for the advancementof the Reformation throughout Europe. H<strong>is</strong> course as a public leader wasnot faultless, nor were h<strong>is</strong> doctrines free from error. But he wasinstrumental in promulgating truths that were of special importance in h<strong>is</strong>time, in maintaining the principles of Protestant<strong>is</strong>m against the fastreturningtide of popery, and in promoting in the reformed churchessimplicity and purity of life, in place of the pride and corruption fosteredunder the Rom<strong>is</strong>h teaching.From Geneva, publications and teachers went out to spread the reformeddoctrines. To th<strong>is</strong> point the persecuted of all lands looked for instruction,counsel, and encouragement. <strong>The</strong> city of Calvin became a refuge for thehunted Reformers of all Western Europe. Fleeing from the awful tempeststhat continued for centuries, the fugitives came to the gates of Geneva.Starving, wounded, bereft of home and kindred, they were warmlywelcomed and tenderly cared for; and finding a home here, they blessed the
