418because He <strong>is</strong> worthy of love. He would have them obey Him because theyhave an intelligent appreciation of H<strong>is</strong> w<strong>is</strong>dom, justice, and benevolence.And all who have a just conception of these qualities will love Him becausethey are drawn toward Him in admiration of H<strong>is</strong> attributes.<strong>The</strong> principles of kindness, mercy, and love, taught and exemplified by ourSaviour, are a transcript of the will and character of God. Chr<strong>is</strong>t declaredthat He taught nothing except that which He had received from H<strong>is</strong> Father.<strong>The</strong> principles of the divine government are in perfect harmony with theSaviour's precept, "<strong>Love</strong> your enemies." God executes justice upon thewicked, for the good of the universe, and even for the good of those uponwhom H<strong>is</strong> judgments are v<strong>is</strong>ited. He would make them happy if He coulddo so in accordance with the laws of H<strong>is</strong> government and the justice of H<strong>is</strong>character. He surrounds them with the tokens of H<strong>is</strong> love, He grants them aknowledge of H<strong>is</strong> law, and follows them with the offers of H<strong>is</strong> mercy; butthey desp<strong>is</strong>e H<strong>is</strong> love, make void H<strong>is</strong> law, and reject H<strong>is</strong> mercy. Whileconstantly receiving H<strong>is</strong> gifts, they d<strong>is</strong>honor the Giver; they hate Godbecause they know that He abhors their sins. <strong>The</strong> Lord bears long with theirperversity; but the dec<strong>is</strong>ive hour will come at last, when their destiny <strong>is</strong> tobe decided. Will He then chain these rebels to H<strong>is</strong> side? Will He force themto do H<strong>is</strong> will?Those who have chosen Satan as their leader and have been controlled byh<strong>is</strong> power are not prepared to enter the presence of God. Pride, deception,licentiousness, cruelty, have become fixed in their characters. Can theyenter heaven to dwell forever with those whom they desp<strong>is</strong>ed and hated onearth? Truth will never be agreeable to a liar; meekness will not sat<strong>is</strong>fy selfesteemand pride; purity <strong>is</strong> not acceptable to the corrupt; d<strong>is</strong>interested lovedoes not appear attractive to the self<strong>is</strong>h. What source of enjoyment couldheaven offer to those who are wholly absorbed in earthly and self<strong>is</strong>hinterests?Could those whose lives have been spent in rebellion against God besuddenly transported to heaven and witness the high, the holy state ofperfection that ever ex<strong>is</strong>ts there,– every soul filled with love, everycountenance beaming with joy, enrapturing music in melodious strainsr<strong>is</strong>ing in honor of God and the Lamb, and ceaseless streams of light flowingupon the redeemed from the face of Him who sitteth upon the throne,–couldthose whose hearts are filled with hatred of God, of truth and holiness,mingle with the heavenly throng and join their songs of pra<strong>is</strong>e? Could theyendure the glory of God and the Lamb? No, no; years of probation were
