28821A Warning RejectedIn preaching the doctrine of the second advent, William Miller and h<strong>is</strong>associates had labored with the sole purpose of arousing men to apreparation for the judgment. <strong>The</strong>y had sought to awaken professors ofreligion to the true hope of the church and to their need of a deeperChr<strong>is</strong>tian experience, and they labored also to awaken the unconverted tothe duty of immediate repentance and conversion to God. "<strong>The</strong>y made noattempt to convert men to a sect or party in religion. Hence they laboredamong all parties and sects, without interfering with their organization ord<strong>is</strong>cipline.""In all my labors," said Miller, "I never had the desire or thought toestabl<strong>is</strong>h any separate interest from that of ex<strong>is</strong>ting denominations, or tobenefit one at the expense of another. I thought to benefit all. Supposingthat all Chr<strong>is</strong>tians would rejoice in the prospect of Chr<strong>is</strong>t's coming, and thatthose who could not see as I did would not love any the less those whoshould embrace th<strong>is</strong> doctrine, I did not conceive there would ever be anynecessity for separate meetings. My whole object was a desire to convertsouls to God, to notify the world of a coming judgment, and to induce myfellow men to make that preparation of heart which will enable them tomeet their God in peace. <strong>The</strong> great majority of those who were convertedunder my labors united with the various ex<strong>is</strong>ting churches."–Bl<strong>is</strong>s, page328.As h<strong>is</strong> work tended to build up the churches, it was for a time regarded withfavor. But as min<strong>is</strong>ters and religious leaders decided against the adventdoctrine and desired to suppress all agitation of the subject, they do not onlyopposed it from the pulpit, but denied their members the privilege ofattending preaching upon the second advent, or even of speaking of theirhope in the social meetings of the church. Thus the believers foundthemselves in a position of great trial and perplexity. <strong>The</strong>y loved theirchurches and were loath to separate from them; but as they saw thetestimony of God's word suppressed and their right to investigate theprophecies denied they felt that loyalty to God forbade them to submit.Those who sought to shut out the testimony of God's word they could notregard as constituting the church of Chr<strong>is</strong>t, "the pillar and ground of the
