20315The Bible and the French RevolutionIn the sixteenth century the Reformation, presenting an open Bible to thepeople, had sought admission to all the countries of Europe. Some nationswelcomed it with gladness, as a messenger of Heaven. In other lands thepapacy succeeded to a great extent in preventing its entrance; and the lightof Bible knowledge, with its elevating influences, was almost whollyexcluded. In one country, though the light found entrance, it was notcomprehended by the darkness. For centuries, truth and error struggled forthe mastery. And I will give power unto My two witnesses, and theyshall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed insackcloth. . . . And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beastthat ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, andshall overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies shall lie in thestreet of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, wherealso our Lord was crucified. . . . And they that dwell upon the earth shall
