16012<strong>The</strong> French Reformation<strong>The</strong> Protest of Spires and the Confession at Augsburg, which marked thetriumph of the Reformation in Germany, were followed by years of conflictand darkness. Weakened by div<strong>is</strong>ions among its supporters, and assailed bypowerful foes, Protestant<strong>is</strong>m seemed destined to be utterly destroyed.Thousands sealed their testimony with their blood. Civil war broke out; theProtestant cause was betrayed by one of its leading adherents; the noblest ofthe reformed princes fell into the hands of the emperor and were dragged ascaptives from town to town. But in the moment of h<strong>is</strong> apparent triumph, theemperor was smitten with defeat. He saw the prey wrested from h<strong>is</strong> grasp,and he was forced at last to grant toleration to the doctrines which it hadbeen the ambition of h<strong>is</strong> life to destroy. He had staked h<strong>is</strong> kingdom, h<strong>is</strong>treasures, and life itself upon the crushing out of the heresy. Now he saw h<strong>is</strong>armies wasted by battle, h<strong>is</strong> treasuries drained, h<strong>is</strong> many kingdomsthreatened by revolt, while everywhere the faith which he had vainlyendeavored to suppress, was extending. Charles V had been battling againstomnipotent power. God had said, "Let there be light," but the emperor hadsought to keep the darkness unbroken. H<strong>is</strong> purposes had failed; and inpremature old age, worn out with the long struggle, he abdicated the throneand buried himself in a clo<strong>is</strong>ter.In Switzerland, as in Germany, there came dark days for the Reformation.While many cantons accepted the reformed faith, others clung with blindpers<strong>is</strong>tence to the creed of Rome. <strong>The</strong>ir persecution of those who desired toreceive the truth finally gave r<strong>is</strong>e to civil war. Zwingli and many who hadunited with him in reform fell on the bloody field of Cappel.Oecolampadius, overcome by these terrible d<strong>is</strong>asters, soon after died. Romewas triumphant, and in many places seemed about to recover all that shehad lost. But He whose counsels are from everlasting had not forsaken H<strong>is</strong>cause or H<strong>is</strong> people. H<strong>is</strong> hand would bring deliverance for them. In otherlands He had ra<strong>is</strong>ed up laborers to carry forward the reform.In France, before the name of Luther had been heard as a Reformer, the dayhad already begun to break.
