452others into the practice of fraud, robbery, and murder; and Satan exults inthe success of h<strong>is</strong> hell<strong>is</strong>h schemes. <strong>The</strong> infatuation of vice, the wantontaking of life, the terrible increase of intemperance and iniquity of everyorder and degree, should arouse all who fear God, to inquire what can bedone to stay the tide of evil.Courts of justice are corrupt. Rulers are actuated by desire for gain and loveof sensual pleasure. Intemperance has beclouded the faculties of many sothat Satan has almost complete control of them. Jur<strong>is</strong>ts are perverted,bribed, deluded. Drunkenness and revelry, passion, envy, d<strong>is</strong>honesty ofevery sort, are represented among those who admin<strong>is</strong>ter the laws. "Justicestandeth afar off: for truth <strong>is</strong> fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter."Isaiah 59:14.<strong>The</strong> iniquity and spiritual darkness that prevailed under the supremacy ofRome were the inevitable result of her suppression of the Scriptures; butwhere <strong>is</strong> to be found the cause of the widespread infidelity, the rejection ofthe law of God, and the consequent corruption, under the full blaze ofgospel light in an age of religious freedom? Now that Satan can no longerkeep the world under h<strong>is</strong> control by withholding the Scriptures, he resorts toother means to accompl<strong>is</strong>h the same object. To destroy faith in the Bibleserves h<strong>is</strong> purpose as well as to destroy the Bible itself. By introducing thebelief that God's law <strong>is</strong> not binding, he as effectually leads men totransgress as if they were wholly ignorant of its precepts. And now, as informer ages, he has worked through the church to further h<strong>is</strong> designs. <strong>The</strong>religious organizations of the day have refused to l<strong>is</strong>ten to unpopular truthsplainly brought to view in the Scriptures, and in combating them they haveadopted interpretations and taken positions which have sown broadcast theseeds of skeptic<strong>is</strong>m. Clinging to the papal error of natural immortality andman's consciousness in death, they have rejected the only defense againstthe delusions of spiritual<strong>is</strong>m. <strong>The</strong> doctrine of eternal torment has led manyto d<strong>is</strong>believe the Bible. And as the claims of the fourth commandment areurged upon the people, it <strong>is</strong> found that the observance of the seventh-daySabbath <strong>is</strong> enjoined; and as the only way to free themselves from a dutywhich they are unwilling to perform, many popular teachers declare that thelaw of God <strong>is</strong> no longer binding. Thus they cast away the law and theSabbath together. As the work of Sabbath reform extends, th<strong>is</strong> rejection ofthe divine law to avoid the claims of the fourth commandment will becomewell-nigh universal. <strong>The</strong> teachings of religious leaders have opened the doorto infidelity, to spiritual<strong>is</strong>m, and to contempt for God's holy law; and upon
