Genes<strong>is</strong>3:15. <strong>The</strong> divine sentence pronounced against Satan after the fall of manwas also a prophecy, embracing all the ages to the close of time andforeshadowing the great conflict to engage all the races of men who shouldlive upon the earth.God declares: "I will put enmity." Th<strong>is</strong> enmity <strong>is</strong> not naturally entertained.When man transgressed the divine law, h<strong>is</strong> nature became evil, and he wasin harmony, and not at variance, with Satan. <strong>The</strong>re ex<strong>is</strong>ts naturally noenmity between sinful man and the originator of sin. Both became evilthrough apostasy. <strong>The</strong> apostate <strong>is</strong> never at rest, except as he obtainssympathy and support by inducing others to follow h<strong>is</strong> example. For th<strong>is</strong>reason fallen angels and wicked men unite in desperate companionship. Hadnot God specially interposed, Satan and man would have entered into analliance against Heaven; and instead of cher<strong>is</strong>hing enmity against Satan, thewhole human family would have been united in opposition to God.Satan tempted man to sin, as he had caused angels to rebel, that he mightthus secure co-operation in h<strong>is</strong> warfare against Heaven. <strong>The</strong>re was nod<strong>is</strong>sension between himself and the fallen angels as regards their hatred ofChr<strong>is</strong>t; while on all other points there was d<strong>is</strong>cord, they were firmly unitedin opposing the authority of the Ruler of the universe. But when Satan heardthe declaration that enmity should ex<strong>is</strong>t between himself and the woman,and between h<strong>is</strong> seed and her seed, he knew that h<strong>is</strong> efforts to depravehuman nature would be interrupted; that by some means man was to beenabled to res<strong>is</strong>t h<strong>is</strong> power.Satan's enmity against the human race <strong>is</strong> kindled because, through Chr<strong>is</strong>t,they are the objects of God's love and mercy. He desires to thwart the divineplan for man's redemption, to cast d<strong>is</strong>honor upon God, by defacing anddefiling H<strong>is</strong> handiwork; he would cause grief in heaven and fill the earthwith woe and desolation. And he points to all th<strong>is</strong> evil as the result of God'swork in creating man.It <strong>is</strong> the grace that Chr<strong>is</strong>t implants in the soul which creates in man enmityagainst Satan.
