451Wherever the divine precepts are rejected, sin ceases to appear sinful orrighteousness desirable. Those who refuse to submit to the government ofGod are wholly unfitted to govern themselves. Through their perniciousteachings the spirit of insubordination <strong>is</strong> implanted in the hearts of childrenand youth, who are naturally impatient of control; and a lawless, licentiousstate of society results. While scoffing at the credulity of those who obeythe requirements of God, the multitudes eagerly accept the delusions ofSatan. <strong>The</strong>y give the rein to lust and practice the sins which have calleddown judgments upon the heathen.Those who teach the people to regard lightly the commandments of Godsow d<strong>is</strong>obedience to reap d<strong>is</strong>obedience. Let the restraint imposed by thedivine law be wholly cast aside, and human laws would soon bed<strong>is</strong>regarded. Because God forbids d<strong>is</strong>honest practices, coveting, lying, anddefrauding, men are ready to trample upon H<strong>is</strong> statutes as a hindrance totheir worldly prosperity; but the results of ban<strong>is</strong>hing these precepts wouldbe such as they do not anticipate. If the law were not binding, why shouldany fear to transgress? Property would no longer be safe. Men would obtaintheir neighbor's possessions by violence, and the strongest would becomerichest. Life itself would not be respected. <strong>The</strong> marriage vow would nolonger stand as a sacred bulwark to protect the family. He who had thepower, would, if he desired, take h<strong>is</strong> neighbor's wife by violence. <strong>The</strong> fifthcommandment would be set aside with the fourth. Children would notshrink from taking the life of their parents if by so doing they could obtainthe desire of their corrupt hearts. <strong>The</strong> civilized world would become a hordeof robbers and assassins; and peace, rest, and happiness would be ban<strong>is</strong>hedfrom the earth.Already the doctrine that men are released from obedience to God'srequirements has weakened the force of moral obligation and opened thefloodgates of iniquity upon the world. Lawlessness, d<strong>is</strong>sipation, andcorruption are sweeping in upon us like an overwhelming tide. In thefamily, Satan <strong>is</strong> at work. H<strong>is</strong> banner waves, even in professedly Chr<strong>is</strong>tianhouseholds. <strong>The</strong>re <strong>is</strong> envy, evil surm<strong>is</strong>ing, hypocr<strong>is</strong>y, estrangement,emulation, strife, betrayal of sacred trusts, indulgence of lust. <strong>The</strong> wholesystem of religious principles and doctrines, which should form thefoundation and framework of social life, seems to be a tottering mass, readyto fall to ruin. <strong>The</strong> vilest of criminals, when thrown into pr<strong>is</strong>on for theiroffenses, are often made the recipients of gifts and attentions as if they hadattained an enviable d<strong>is</strong>tinction. <strong>Great</strong> publicity <strong>is</strong> given to their characterand crimes. <strong>The</strong> press publ<strong>is</strong>hes the revolting details of vice, thus initiating
