Series Bf357. Annual <strong>and</strong> monthly totals include regular state Unemployment<br />

<strong>Insurance</strong> program <strong>and</strong> payments made by states as agents of the<br />

federal government under the Federal Employees’ Unemployment Compensation<br />

program <strong>and</strong> under the Ex-Servicemen’s Compensation Act of 1958.<br />

Annual data are only for payments under Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of<br />

1944, Veterans’ Readjustment Act of 1962, Trade Expansion Act of 1962,<br />

Disaster Relief Act of 1970, <strong>and</strong> the Temporary <strong>and</strong> Permanent Extended<br />

Unemployment <strong>Insurance</strong> programs. Beginning in 1961, includes program<br />

in Puerto Rico. Beginning in 1981, state Unemployment <strong>Insurance</strong> <strong>and</strong> Ex-<br />

Servicemen’s Compensation Act only. Beginning July 1987, state programs<br />

only.<br />

Series Bf358–359. Benefits in Rhode Isl<strong>and</strong> (from 1943), in California (from<br />

1947), in New Jersey (from 1949), in New York (from 1950), in Puerto Rico<br />

(from 1970), in Hawai’i (from 1972), including payments under private plans<br />

where applicable.<br />

Series Bf360. Benefits began in 1947.<br />

Series Bf361. Workers’ compensation benefits include those under federal<br />

workers’ compensation laws <strong>and</strong> under state laws paid by private insurance<br />

carriers, state funds, <strong>and</strong> self-insurers. Beginning in 1959, includes data for<br />

Alaska <strong>and</strong> Hawai’i. Monthly data refer only to federal Black Lung Benefits<br />

administered by the <strong>Social</strong> Security Administration (starting in 1970).<br />

Series Bf362. Includes Aid to Families with Dependent Children <strong>and</strong> General<br />

<strong>Assistance</strong>. Through 1973, includes Old-Age <strong>Assistance</strong>, Aid to the Blind, <strong>and</strong><br />

Aid to the Permanently <strong>and</strong> Totally Disabled (see text for series Bf363). Includes<br />

payments to intermediate-care facilities (July 1968–December 1971)<br />

<strong>and</strong> payments for emergency assistance, beginning July 1969. Includes money<br />

payments under medical assistance for the aged (1960–1969). Excludes<br />

medical vendor payments. Starting in 1974, includes money payments to<br />

the aged, blind, <strong>and</strong> disabled in Guam, Puerto Rico, <strong>and</strong> the Virgin Isl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

under federally aided public assistance programs.<br />

Series Bf363. The Supplemental Security Income program supersedes the<br />

public assistance programs of Old-Age <strong>Assistance</strong>. Aid to the Blind, <strong>and</strong><br />

Aid to the Permanently <strong>and</strong> Totally Disabled in the fifty states <strong>and</strong> the District<br />

of Columbia, beginning in 1974 – beginning in 1978, in the Northern<br />

Mariana Isl<strong>and</strong>s. Annual totals include payments under state-administered<br />

supplementation programs.<br />

by 1966 legislation for persons aged 72 or older <strong>and</strong> not insured under the<br />

regular or transitional provisions of the <strong>Social</strong> Security Act.<br />

Series Bf367. Beginning January 1988, includes both Civil Service Retirement<br />

System <strong>and</strong> Federal Employee Retirement System beneficiaries.<br />

Series Bf372. Monthly number at end of quarter.<br />

Series Bf373 <strong>and</strong> Bf375. Average number during fourteen-day registration<br />

period.<br />
