The concept of māyā was introduced by Adi Shankara to explain the existence of the
cosmos and even of Iswara. He refuses, however, to explain the relationship between
Brahman and māyā. Somehow some time in history this strange thing happened when
Nirguna turned Saguna in Brahman so that while the unity exists, the inhomogenity
came into existence.
How?
We do not know, because it is beyond our logic.
Since Brahman is the only truth, māyā, cannot be true. Yet it is true for the one who
experience it as long as it lasts. So we can define Maya as transient truth. In this
sense, reality includes māyā and the Brahman. Maya is transient while Brahman is
permanent and eternal.
