knowledge that data can have about itself. The things that any digital object can tell you<br />
about itself, such as its origin, its location in a database, its size, and the type of object it is<br />
—whether an ebook, music video, or photograph—limit the ways in which it can be<br />
linked to other digital objects and how it can be searched for. A good example is the<br />
metadata for the digital object that represents a book in an online store. If the data doesn’t<br />
know the object represents a romance novel, that book won’t come up in searches for that<br />
category. The ability to connect, or link, digital objects may be the atomic unit of digital<br />
experiences, at the very core of what makes them work.<br />
