DON’T BECOME OVERLY HABITUATED
When I have to design for a system that I don’t normally use, work gets hard. All of us,
designers and users, become habituated to the systems we use most. My own habits as an
iOS user are different from those of an Android or Windows Phone user. I still have a hard
time using the back button on Android devices when I switch over from using my iPhone.
Understanding the little details of each platform will help you be aware of polishes that
users will really get pissed off about if you forget or ignore them. I once showed the
drawing below to a class of mostly iPhone users and asked the Android owners to tell me
what it was.
They had no idea because it was using the language of another system. If you want to
become a good UX designer, you have to become multi-system-lingual.
An iOS app icon with a badge in the top right is unfamiliar to Android users.
