Option 19A Preferred Option<br />
Promote the implementation of the Lagan Navigation as a Key Tourism /<br />
Recreation Opportunity Area: The ‘Discover Waterways Lisburn’ project is a<br />
unique opportunity for the creation of a Key Tourism Opportunity Area,<br />
providing a rich historical and cultural asset which, if implemented could make<br />
a significant contribution economically and environmentally.<br />
Reason<br />
The Lagan Navigation offers the potential of an additional key Tourism Opportunity<br />
Area within the Council area and the Council is supportive of initiatives brought<br />
forward to reinstate and restore this route (See Appendix I Map 16).<br />
The reinstatement of this route from Belfast to Lisburn is an enabling step to<br />
potentially reconnect to Lough Neagh and beyond into the Republic of Ireland. This<br />
has the potential to act as a major draw for water-based tourism with a community<br />
focus, and include conference facilities, water sports centre, educational facilities, and<br />
café, making this a unique future tourism destination.<br />
This option complies with regional guidance contained within the Regional<br />
<strong>Development</strong> strategy (RDS) and regional policies within the Strategic <strong>Plan</strong>ning Policy<br />
Statement (SPPS).<br />
