Options for Key Issue 23: Retention of Key Park & Ride Sites
Option 23A Preferred Option
Retain a number of key Park & Ride Sites with identification of potential new
Park & Ride/Park & Share sites: This option provides for all existing and proposed
Park & Ride sites to be retained and safeguarded, i.e.
• West Lisburn Park & Ride (Proposed)
• Moira Park & Ride Extension adjacent to Railway Station (Proposed)
• Relocation of Sprucefield Park & Ride (Proposed)
• Cairnshill Park & Ride (Existing - Complete)
• Dundonald Park & Ride (Existing - Complete)
• Lisburn Railway Station Park & Ride (Existing - but limited parking
availability).
The potential also exists to identify new Park & Ride or Park & Share sites across
the Council Area. This option is dependent on funding and feasibility analysis
provided by Central Government and/or Translink.
Reason
This option retains and promotes a number of key Park & Ride sites across the
Council area as an effective measure to aid congestion and reduce travel
dependency by car:
• The proposed Park & Ride in West Lisburn will complement the proposed
new railway halt at Knockmore (350 spaces)
• The proposed Moira Park & Ride extension is adjacent to the existing
Railway Station (430 spaces)
• Proposed relocation of Sprucefield Park & Ride to nearby Park & Ride site
(658 spaces)
• Cairnshill Park & Ride is operational (724 spaces)
• Dundonald Park & Ride is operational and will complement the Belfast
Rapid Transit bus system due to start in 2018 (517 spaces)
• Lisburn Railway Station Park & Ride is operational (45 spaces.
This option allows greater flexibility for identifying additional Park & Ride or Park
& Share Schemes in ‘pressure’ areas and is subject to funding and feasibility
analysis provided by Central Government and/or Translink. Should a need be
identified for a new and viable facility, this could be identified and safeguarded
through the Local Development Plan.
Option 23B
Retain a number of key Park & Ride Sites: The above mentioned Park & Ride sites
(proposed and existing) will be afforded protection through the new LDP. This
option would not identify any new Park & Ride or Park & Share sites across the
Council area.
Reason
Whilst this option complies with regional strategic objectives for transportation
and planning which aim to promote sustainable patterns of development, ensure
accessibility for all, help tackle congestion and make best use of available services,
it would not afford the opportunity to identify any new Park & Ride or Park &
Share sites.
