Accessibility Analysis<br />
The Department for Infrastructure (formerly Department for Regional<br />
<strong>Development</strong>) undertook an ‘Accessibility Study’ for each of the new 11<br />
Council areas across Northern Ireland. The purpose of this analysis was<br />
to establish travel times for walking, cycling and driving, with the goal of<br />
improving accessibility for all modes, for the benefit of communities.<br />

GIS tools, pedestrian models and site audits were used to review facilities<br />
in order to assess the degree to which barriers may be imposed on<br />
potential travellers. In addition, market research was undertaken both<br />
with existing travellers but more importantly with non-travellers in order<br />
to assess accessibility to and from the following locations:<br />
• Ulsterbus Depot, 13 Smithfield Street, Lisburn<br />
• Ulster Bank, 47 Main Street, Moira<br />
• Forestside Shopping Centre, Metropolitan Castlereagh<br />
• Carryduff Shopping Centre<br />
Maps were provided by Central Government to the Councils in May 2016<br />
which display the travel times for walking, cycling (5min – 30 min<br />
intervals) and driving (10min – 60min intervals) to and from each<br />
location.<br />
By way of example, the following map shows walking times to Lisburn City<br />
Centre. A full copy of the maps showing walking, cycling and driving times<br />
are provided in Appendix J Maps 26-35.<br />
