250 THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD
It's a had day for an enemy we have warned when we can dismount in their
square!"'
(Anas went on) "We captured some donkey meat. Then the crier of the
Prophet (SAAS) called out, 'God and His prophet forbid you to eat the meat
of donkeys; it is unclean!'"
Al-Bukhai is unique in giving this; Muslim did not.
Imm Ahmad stated that CAhd al-Razz~q related to him, quoting Makar,
from Qatsda, from Anas, who said, "When the Prophet (SAAS) came to Khayhar,
he found them carrying their hoes as they went out to their fields. When they
saw him and the army with him, they fled back into their forts. The Prophet
(SAAS) then said, 'Allzhu Akbar! Khaybar is ruined! It's a bad day for those
already warned if we can dismount in their open square!"'
Ahad is alone in giving this hadrth; it conforms to the criteria for both sahib
collections.
Al-Bukhsri stated that Sulaymsn b. Harh related to him, quoting Hammnd b.
Zayd, from Thsbit, from Anas h. Mslik, who said, "At Khaybar, the Messenger
of God (SAAS) performed the pre-dawn prayer close to Khaybar and then he
said, 'Allahu Akbar! Khaybar is ruined! It's a bad day for those already warned
if we can dismount in their open square!'
"They (the people of Khaybar) took various paths in flight. And the Prophet
(SAAS) killed their warriors and took their families prisoner. Among the
prisoners was Safiyya. She went to the lot of Dihya al-Kalbi, and then to the
Prophet (SAAS), who set her free as her dowry.
"CAhd al-CAaz b. Suhayb said to Thshit, 'Ahii Muhammad, was it you who
asked Anas, "What was it he gave as her dowry?"' Thahit nodded in affirmation
to him."
He was alone in relating this hadith; Muslim did not. Both al-Bukhm and
Muslim reported the prohibition of eating the meat of domestic donkeys through
various chains of transmission in the work Krtzb al-Ahkam.
The ha& al-Baybqi stated, "Ahii Tithiir, the jurist informed us, quoting Kha-b
h. Abad al-Tiisi; Muhammad h. Hamid al-Ahflridi related to us, quoting
Muhammad h. al-Fadl, from Muslim al-Acwar al-Mh'i, from Anas h. Mslik,
who said, 'The Messenger of God (SAAS) used to visit the sick, follow behind
funeral processions and respond to the pleas from slaves, and rode on donkeys.
At the expeditions to Banii Qurayza and to al-Nadir, he rode a donkey. At the
battle of Khaybar he rode a donkey with a halter made of palm fibre, and his
saddle was also made of palm fibre.'"
Al-Tirmidhi related this hadith in its entirety from 'Ali h. Hajr, from 'Ali b.
Mushir, and Ibn Mnja, from Muhammad b. al-Sah*, from Sufym, and from
Wmar h. GfiC from Jarir, all of them quoting Muslim, he being Ihn Kaysm
al-Mu121 al-A'war al-Kiifi, from Anas. Al-Tirmidhi stated, "We know of this
only from his (radirh; and he is a somewhat weak source."
