IMAM ABU AL-FIDA' ISMA'IL IBN KATHIR 48 1
This is what we have been informed about those Hawain taken captive.
Al-Bukhari did not refer to the objection raised by al-Aqra', Wyayna and their
families; he remained silent on the issue. A positive (statement) generally takes
priority over a denial. And more so if there be silence.
Al-Bukhm related from a hadith of al-Zuhri as follows, "Wmar h. Mulpmmad
b. Jubayr b. Mufi informed me, from hi father, that Juhayr h. Muc'im informed
him that while he was with the Messenger of God (SAAS), accompanying the
men returning from Hunayn, the bedouin so crowded around hi questioning
hi that they forced him against a tree which pulled off his cloak. The Messenger
of God (SAAS) stopped and asked, 'Hand me back my cloak. If I had as many
camels as these thorny trees, I would distribute them among you. You know me
not to be miserly, untruthful or cowardly."'
Ihn Is& stated that he was informed by Aha Wajra, Yazid b. Wbayd al-Sa'di,
that the Messenger of God (SAAS) gave to 'Ali h. Aha Talib a slave girl named
Rap, daughter of Hild b. Hay% b. Wmayya, and to 'Uthmm b. 'Aff%n he gave
a slave-girl called Zaynab, daughter of Hay& h. 'Amr b. Hay%. He also gave a
slave girl to Wmar, hut he gave her to his son, 'Ahd Allah.
Ibn Ishaq went on to state that Nafi' quoted Wmar's son 'Abd Alhh as
having said, "I sent her off to my aunts of Banii Jumah to prepare her properly
for me while I circumambulated the ka'ba and arranged to come and take her on
my return from the mosque. When I had finished at the mosque, I went there
and found everyone in turmoil. I asked what was going on and they replied
that the Messenger of God (SAAS) had returned their wives and children (to
Hawazin). I then said, 'Your woman friend is with Bana Jumab; go and get her.'
And they did so."
lhn Ishzq continued, "Wyayna b. Hisn took an elderly Hawain woman,
saying as he did so, 'I can see an old lady who I thii is of high standing in her
tribe; ransom for her may he substantial.' When the Messenger of God (SAAS)
returned the captives at a rate of six camels per person, Wyayna refused to give
her back. Zuhayr b. Surad then told him, 'Let her go; I swear, her mouth is not
cool, her breasts are not rounded, she has no chid in her womb, she has no upset
husband, and her milk is not abundant. It's not as if you've taken a woman who
is fair-skinned and a virgin, or even someone who is plump and mature!' And so
Wyayna gave her back in exchange for six camels."
Al-Waqidi stated that when the Messenger of God (SAAS) divided up the
spoils at al-Ji'rma, each warrior received four camels and forty sheep.
Salama quoted Muhammad b. IshZq, from 'Abd Allah b. Ahii Bakr to the
effect that a man who took part in the Battle of Hunayn said, "I was riding along
on my camel at the side of the Messenger of God (SAAS), and I was wearing
heavy hoots. My camel humped against that of the Messenger of God (SAAS),
and the toe of my hoot struck and hurt his leg. He then tapped my foot with his
whip, saying, 'You hurt me! Go further away from me!' So I moved off. Next
day the Messenger of God (SAAS) wanted to see me and I assumed this was
