(SAAS) having seen how stoically she had received <strong>the</strong> news <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deaths <strong>of</strong><br />

her bro<strong>the</strong>r and her uncle and how she lamented for her husband, commented,<br />

'A woman's husband has a very special place with her."'<br />

<strong>Ibn</strong> Majah stated that <strong>Muhammad</strong> b. Yahy2 related to him, quoting Ishaq<br />

b. <strong>Muhammad</strong> al-Farwa, quoting <strong>Muhammad</strong> b. Wmar, from Ibfihim b.<br />

<strong>Muhammad</strong> b. 'Abd All& b. Jahsh, from his fa<strong>the</strong>r, from Hamna, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

J&sh, who said that when she was told <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> her bro<strong>the</strong>r, she said,<br />

"May God have mercy on him! To God do we belong, and to Him do we<br />

return." When she was <strong>the</strong>n told that her husband had been killed, she burst<br />

out, "0 woe!" <strong>The</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) <strong>the</strong>n said, "A husband alone has<br />

control over part <strong>of</strong> his wife's feelings."<br />

<strong>Ibn</strong> Ish~q stated, "'Abd al-WQid b. Abn 'Awn related to me, from Ismacil,<br />

from <strong>Muhammad</strong>, from Sa'd b. Aba Waqqa?, who said, '<strong>The</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God<br />

(SAAS) went past a woman <strong>of</strong> Bana Din% whose husband, bro<strong>the</strong>r and fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

had been struck down while with <strong>the</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) at Uhud. When<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir deaths were reported to her, she asked, "And how is it with <strong>the</strong> Messenger<br />

<strong>of</strong> God (SAAS)?" <strong>The</strong>y replied, "He is fine. He's just as you might wish." She<br />

<strong>the</strong>n asked, "Show him to me; I want to see him." When he was pointed out to<br />

her, she commented, "Every loss after you had gone would bejalal, trivial.""'<br />

<strong>Ibn</strong> Hishzm noted, "Al-jalal is a word that can apply to minor or to major<br />

matters. Here it means 'minor'. Imru' al-Qays spoke <strong>the</strong> verse,<br />

'Bano Asad's killlng <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir chief makes anything <strong>the</strong>reafterjahl.'<br />

"Here <strong>the</strong> wordjalal means trivial or few."<br />

<strong>Ibn</strong> Ish2q stated, "When <strong>the</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) arrived home to<br />

his family, he handed his sword to his daughter Fzcima and said, 'Wash <strong>the</strong><br />

blood <strong>of</strong>f this, my child. I swear <strong>by</strong> God, it was true to me today!'<br />

"'Ah b. Aba Talib <strong>the</strong>n handed her his sword repeating, 'Wash <strong>the</strong> blood <strong>of</strong>f<br />

it; I swear <strong>by</strong> God it was true to me today!'<br />

"<strong>The</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) <strong>the</strong>n commented, 'And if you stood true in<br />

<strong>the</strong> fighting, so too along with you did Sahl b. Hunayf and Abii Dujana!'"<br />

Masa b. Wqba stated elsewhere, 'When <strong>the</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) saw<br />

'Ali's sword tinged with blood, he said, 'If you fought well, <strong>the</strong>n so did '&im b.<br />

Thabit b. Abn al-Aqlah, al-Hiirith b. al-Simma and Sahl b. Hanif.'"<br />

Al-Bayhaqi recounted from Sufyan b. Wyayna, from 'Amr b. Din%, from<br />

'Ikrima, from <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Abbas, who said that 'Ali b. Abn Talib at <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> Uhud<br />

brought along his sword that had bent and told Fqkna, "Be thankful when you<br />

take this sword, for it satisfied my thirst for revenge!"<br />

"<strong>The</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS), said, "If you did well in striking with<br />

your sword, so did Sahl b. Hanif, Abn Dujana, 'Asm b. Thabit and al-HSrith<br />

b. al-Simma."<br />

<strong>Ibn</strong> Hisham stated, "This sword <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) was Dhn<br />

al-FsqZr. And a scholar told me, quoting <strong>Ibn</strong> Aba Najih, 'A crier called out at <strong>the</strong>
