(SAAS) having seen how stoically she had received the news of the deaths of
her brother and her uncle and how she lamented for her husband, commented,
'A woman's husband has a very special place with her."'
Ibn Majah stated that Muhammad b. Yahy2 related to him, quoting Ishaq
b. Muhammad al-Farwa, quoting Muhammad b. Wmar, from Ibfihim b.
Muhammad b. 'Abd All& b. Jahsh, from his father, from Hamna, daughter of
J&sh, who said that when she was told of the death of her brother, she said,
"May God have mercy on him! To God do we belong, and to Him do we
return." When she was then told that her husband had been killed, she burst
out, "0 woe!" The Messenger of God (SAAS) then said, "A husband alone has
control over part of his wife's feelings."
Ibn Ish~q stated, "'Abd al-WQid b. Abn 'Awn related to me, from Ismacil,
from Muhammad, from Sa'd b. Aba Waqqa?, who said, 'The Messenger of God
(SAAS) went past a woman of Bana Din% whose husband, brother and father
had been struck down while with the Messenger of God (SAAS) at Uhud. When
their deaths were reported to her, she asked, "And how is it with the Messenger
of God (SAAS)?" They replied, "He is fine. He's just as you might wish." She
then asked, "Show him to me; I want to see him." When he was pointed out to
her, she commented, "Every loss after you had gone would bejalal, trivial.""'
Ibn Hishzm noted, "Al-jalal is a word that can apply to minor or to major
matters. Here it means 'minor'. Imru' al-Qays spoke the verse,
'Bano Asad's killlng of their chief makes anything thereafterjahl.'
"Here the wordjalal means trivial or few."
Ibn Ish2q stated, "When the Messenger of God (SAAS) arrived home to
his family, he handed his sword to his daughter Fzcima and said, 'Wash the
blood off this, my child. I swear by God, it was true to me today!'
"'Ah b. Aba Talib then handed her his sword repeating, 'Wash the blood off
it; I swear by God it was true to me today!'
"The Messenger of God (SAAS) then commented, 'And if you stood true in
the fighting, so too along with you did Sahl b. Hunayf and Abii Dujana!'"
Masa b. Wqba stated elsewhere, 'When the Messenger of God (SAAS) saw
'Ali's sword tinged with blood, he said, 'If you fought well, then so did '&im b.
Thabit b. Abn al-Aqlah, al-Hiirith b. al-Simma and Sahl b. Hanif.'"
Al-Bayhaqi recounted from Sufyan b. Wyayna, from 'Amr b. Din%, from
'Ikrima, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said that 'Ali b. Abn Talib at the battle of Uhud
brought along his sword that had bent and told Fqkna, "Be thankful when you
take this sword, for it satisfied my thirst for revenge!"
"The Messenger of God (SAAS), said, "If you did well in striking with
your sword, so did Sahl b. Hanif, Abn Dujana, 'Asm b. Thabit and al-HSrith
b. al-Simma."
Ibn Hisham stated, "This sword of the Messenger of God (SAAS) was Dhn
al-FsqZr. And a scholar told me, quoting Ibn Aba Najih, 'A crier called out at the
