386 THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD
Aha Ruhm Kulthiim h. Huvayn h. Wtha h. Khalaf al-Ghifm in command of
Mediua. He departed on the 10th of Ramadan and fasted, as did those with him.
Having arrived at al-Kadid, between Wsfan and Amaj, he hroke his fast and
thereafter travelled on to Marr al-Zahm, where he and 10,000 Muslims made
camp."
Wrwa h. al-Zuhayr stated, "He had 12,000 men with him." Al-Zuhri and Miisa
b. 'Uqha said the same. Sulaym totalled over 700 men; some say they were over
1,000 strong. Muzayna were over 1,000 strong, and each tribe was represented
in both force and faith in Islam. The muhZjrriin and the an@ accompanied the
Messenger of God (SAAS) en masse, none of them remaining behind.
Al-Bukhzri narrated a similar account from Mahiid, from 'Ahd al-Razaq,
from Macmar, from al-Zuhri.
Al-Bayhaqi narrated, from a hadith of 'A~im b. 'Ah, from al-Layth h. Sacd,
from Wqayl, from al-Zuhri (who said), "'Uhayd Allah h. 'Ahd Allah informed
me, from Ibn 'Ahbas, that the Messenger of God (SAAS) went forth on the
expedition that led to the conquest in Ramadin."
Al-Zuhri went on, "I heard Sa'id b. al-Musayyah make a similar statement,
that he did not know whether he started out with some days left of Sha'bin and
that then Ramadan arrived, or whether he left in Ramadin, after it had begun.
However, 'Uhayd Allah h. 'Ahd Allah informed me that Ihn 'Ahhas said, 'The
Messenger of God (SAAS) fasted until he reached al-Kadid, the well between
Qudayd and Wsfin, where he hroke the fast. And he continued to eat regularly
(without fasting) throughout the month."'
Ai-Bukhi%ri related this from 'Ahd All& b. Ytisuf, from al-Layth. He, however,
did not mention the confusion between Sha'ban and Ramadin,
Al-Bukhari stated, that 'Ali b. 'Ahd Allah related to us, quoting Jarir, from
Mausnr, from Mujahid, from Tawus, that Ibn 'Abhas said, "The Messenger of
God (SAAS) set out in Ramad%, fasting until he reached Wsfin. Then he
called for a vessel and drank from it, allowing the people to see this. He continued
to eat normally until he reached Mecca."
He went on, "Ibn 'Ahhas used to say, 'The Messenger of God (SAAS) both
fasted and ate normally while travelling. Those who wished, fasted; those who
wished, ate normally."'
Yiinus quoted Ibn Ish%q, from al-Zuhri, from 'Ubayd Allah h. 'Ahd Allah as
stating that Ibn 'Ahhas said, "When the Messenger of God (SAAS) set forth on
the conquest of Mecca, he placed Ahii Ruhm Kulthiim b. al-Husayn al-Ghifgri
in command of Medina. He left on the 10th of Ramadin, fasting, as did those
accompanying him. When he arrived at al-Kadid, between 'Usfin and Amaj, he
hroke his fast. When he entered Mecca, he was eating normally and people saw
that this was his latter practice, having abrogated his former, his fasting."
Al-Bayhaqi stated, "His statement, 'he left on the 10th of Ramadan' is interpolated
in the hadirh, as is his reference to 'Uhayd Allah h. Idris, quoting Ibn Ishaq."
