IMAM ABO AL-FIDA' ISMA'IL IBN KATHTR 275<br />

orphans, <strong>the</strong> destitute and wayfarers, ano<strong>the</strong>r to feed <strong>the</strong> wives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Prophet</strong><br />

(SAAS), ano<strong>the</strong>r to feed <strong>the</strong> families <strong>of</strong> those who went out to arrange <strong>the</strong> peace<br />

treaty with <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> Fadak7' <strong>The</strong>se included Muhayyisa h. Mascad, to whom<br />

<strong>the</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) allotted 30 hags <strong>of</strong> dates and 30 bags <strong>of</strong> barley.<br />

Its (Fadak's) two valleys that were set aside for him were named Wadi al-Surir,<br />

and Wzdi Khas."<br />

<strong>Ibn</strong> Ishaq went on to give <strong>the</strong> details <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> allotments made at Khaybar; he<br />

did so fully and very well, may God have mercy on hi.<br />

<strong>The</strong> men placed in charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> division and <strong>the</strong> accounting were Jabbar h.<br />

Sakhr b. Umayya b. Khansa', bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Bana Salama, and Zayd h. ThXbit, may<br />

God he pleased with <strong>the</strong>m both.<br />

<strong>The</strong> commander who had authority over valuation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date-palms <strong>of</strong><br />

Khaybar was 'Ahd All& b. Rawaha. He did this for two years. Following his<br />

death, may God be pleased with him, at <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> Mu'ta, Jabbu b. Sakhr, may<br />

God he pleased with him, took over his work.<br />

Al-Bukhw stated that IsmiiCil related to him, quoting Malik, from 'Ahd<br />

al-Majid b. Suhayl, from Sa'id b. al-Musayyab, from Abii Sacid al-Khudari and<br />

Abii Hurayra, that <strong>the</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) placed a man in command <strong>of</strong><br />

Khaybar who brought him some dates that werelanib, "<strong>of</strong> very high quality".<br />

<strong>The</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) asked him, "Are all <strong>the</strong> dates <strong>of</strong> Khaybar lie<br />

this?" He replied, "No, I swear <strong>by</strong> God, Messenger <strong>of</strong> God! We take a sac weight<br />

<strong>of</strong> this (dates <strong>of</strong> high quality) for two sac or three sac (<strong>of</strong> lesser quality)." He told<br />

him, "No, don't do that. Sell <strong>the</strong> lesser quality dates for cash and <strong>the</strong>n with that<br />

cash buy <strong>the</strong>lanib dates."<br />

Al-Bukhui stated that al-Dar~wardi said, quoting 'Abd al-Majid, from<br />

Sacid b. al-Musayyab, that Abii Sacid and Aba Hurayra both related that <strong>the</strong><br />

Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) sent a bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Banii 'Adi <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> an@r to Khaybar<br />

and appointed him in charge <strong>of</strong> it. And <strong>the</strong> same is related on a different line<br />

<strong>of</strong> transmission from 'Ahd al-Majid, from Aba Sal& al-Samm, from Abii Sacid<br />

and Abii Hurayra.<br />

I note as follows. <strong>The</strong> properties <strong>of</strong> Khaybar gained <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God<br />

(SAAS) and <strong>the</strong> Muslims and all <strong>of</strong> Fadak, constituted a large part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

territory <strong>of</strong> Khayhar. <strong>The</strong>y (<strong>the</strong> Jewish inhabitants) had emerged and made<br />

peace with <strong>the</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir great fear <strong>of</strong> him. To<br />

all this were added <strong>the</strong> acquisitions mentioned above from Banii al-Nadir where<br />

<strong>the</strong> Muslims similarly had no need to use force.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se were <strong>the</strong> personal property <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS). From<br />

<strong>the</strong>m he would subtract <strong>the</strong> yearly expenses <strong>of</strong> his family and <strong>the</strong>n treat <strong>the</strong><br />

remainder as belonging to God. He would use it to pay for <strong>the</strong> mounts, weapons<br />

71. According to <strong>Ibn</strong> Ishzq, when <strong>the</strong> inhabitants <strong>of</strong> Fadak heard <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conquest <strong>of</strong> Khaybar,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y sent emissaries to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Prophet</strong> (SAAS), <strong>of</strong>fering a treaty <strong>of</strong> peace under which <strong>the</strong>y would<br />

remain <strong>the</strong>re and keep half <strong>the</strong>ir produce.
