IMAM ABU AL-FIDX' ISMA'IL IBN KATHIR 289
He who took my soul was He who took yours too!' 'You speak the truth,' he
agreed. He then rode his camel a little way off and dismounted, performed the
ablution and the prayer as he had done previously."
Mdik related it similarly from al-Zuhri, from Sacid, but mursal, incomplete
in its line of transmission. And this too is mursal, from this line as given.
Aha Da'ad stated that h a d b. Sdih related to him, quoting Ibn Wahb
(who said), "Yanus informed me, from Ibn Shihah, from Sacid h. al-Musayyab,
from Aha Hurayra (who said), the Messenger of God (SAAS), having finished
with Khaybar, travelled on by night until we reached al-Kari, and there he had
his wedding. He told Bilal, 'Keep awake for us tonight.' But Bilal's eyes closed
in sleep as he rested against his baggage and neither the Prophet (SAAS) nor he,
nor any of the others woke up before the sun struck them. The Messenger of
God (SAAS) was the first to wake up. In alarm he called out Bilzl's name. Bilal
replied, 'By my father and mother, Messenger of God, He who took my soul
away also took yours!'
"They rode their camels off a little way and then the Messenger of God
(SAAS) performed the ablution. He gave orders to Bild who announced the
prayer, and then he led the morning prayer for them. When he had finished
it, he said, 'One who forgets a prayer should perform it when he remembers.
For God Almighty says, "Perform the prayer for remembrance (of Me)""'
(sayat TZ HZ; XX, v.14).
Yanus stated, "Ibn Shihzb used to recite it (the hadith) like that."
Muslim related it the same from Harmala b. Y*y% from 'Abd Allah h. Wahb.
Therein is stated that this was on their return from Khaybar.
In the hadith of Shu'ba, from J ~ ib. c Shaddad, from 'Ahd al-Rabm b.
Aha 'Alqama, from Ibn Mascad, it is stated that occurred on their return from
al-Hudaybiyya. In one report from him (it states) that it was Bild who kept
awake for them. And there is a report from him (Bilal) that it was he who used
to keep awake for them.
The ha.? al-Bayhaqi stated, "It is likely that this happened twice."
He went on, 'LAnd in a hadith of Clmrm h. Hu~ayn and Aba Qamda (there is
reference to) their sleeping through the prayer. Also in it is the reference to the
water vessel. It is likely that this makes reference to one of the two occasions
in question, or it might be a third."
He went on, "Al-Wqidi related in a hadith of Aba @&a that that happened on
their way hack from the expedition against Tabiik. He stated, 'Zafir b. Sulayman
narrated, from Shu'ba, from Jamic b. Shaddad, from 'Abd al-Rabman, from Ihn
Mascad, that that occurred on their way back from Tahak. But God knows best.'"
Al-Bayhaqi then proceeded to relate what the author of the sahib collection
reported concerning the anecdote of 'Awf al-Acrabi, from Aba Rajs', from
qmrm b. Hu~ayn. It tells of their having slept through the prayer and that there
was a woman who owned two water skins from which sufficient water was drawn
to quench the entire army without diminishing the water in them.
