304 THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD
I jumped out at him and cut off his head, then raced towards their camp,
shouting All~hu Akbar! My companions did the same. I swear, they fled in
disorder, taking with them their women, children and those possessions they
could. We drove off large numbers of their camels and livestock which we
took back to the Messenger of God (SAAS). I went to him carrying the man's
head. He gave me 13 baggage camels from those we captured as my dowry. So I
concluded my marriage."'
THE EXPEDITION IN WHICH MUHALLIM B. f UTHAMA
KILLED 'AMIR B. ALADBAT.
Yazid b. 'Abd AUah b. Qusayr related to me, from Ibn 'Abd Allah b. Ahn
Hadrad, from his father, who said, "The Messenger of God (SAAS) sent us out
against Idam. Our group of Muslims included Aba Qatada al-Harith b. Rih'i and
MuhaUim b. Jaththama h. Qays. We went on until we were in the Idam valley.
There 'Amir h. al-Adhay al-Ashja'i passed us by; he was riding a young camel,
carrying a few provisions and a vessel of yoghurt. He saluted us with the Muslim
words of greeting and so we refrained from attacking him. But Muhallim b.
Jaththzma attacked and killed hi because of some earlier unresolved problem
and seized his camel and provisions. When we reached the Messenger of God,
(SAAS) we told him our news and it was about us that the following verses
of the Qnr'an were revealed, '0 you who believe! When you go forth in God's
cause, be circumspect. Do not say to those who greet you in peace, "You're no
Muslim!" and seek for worldly gain. With God there will be many rewards. That
is the way you behaved previously, but God has now favoured you. Be aware that
God has knowledge of what you do"' (sgrat al-Nu&'; IV, v.94).
Imam Ahmad related this from Ya'qiib, from his father, from Muhammad
b. Ishaq, from Yazid b. 'Abd Allah b. Qusayt, from al-Qa'qa' b. 'Abd All& h.
Aha Hadrad, from his father.
Ibn Ishaq stated, "Mubmmad h. Jacfar related to me, saying, 'I heard Ziy%d
h. Dumira b. Sa'd al-Damri narrating a hadith from Wrwa h. al-Zubayr, from
his father and from his grandfather, both of whom said - they had both been
present at Hunayn - "The Messenger of God (SAAS) performed the al-zuhr,
noon prayer, then went under the shade of a tree where he sat. Wyayna h. Badr
went over to him and demanded the blood of 'Amir h. al-Adbat al-Ashja'i, chief
of (Bano) 'Amir. 'Would you agree to now accept 50 camels and another fifty
when we return to Medina?' the Messenger of God (SAAS) asked. 'Uyayna b.
Badr responded, 'By God, I'll not leave hi
alone till his women experience the
same sorrow my womeu have.'
""'A man from Bana Layth named Ibn Mukayl, a short man, arose. He said,
'Messenger of God, I find nothing comparable to this death since the beginnings
of Islam. All I can compare it to is the rear sheep that flee when their leader out
in front is shot. Keep to the traditional ways today and bring change tomorrow!'
