IMAM ABU AL-FIDA' ISMA'IL IBN KATH~R 53<br />

"Wmar did so and Ahii Sufyiin told him, 'I adjure you <strong>by</strong> God, 'Umar, have<br />

we killed <strong>Muhammad</strong>?' Wmar replied, 'I swear <strong>by</strong> God, no; he is listening now<br />

to your words.' Abii Sufyxn commented, 'I consider you more truthful and<br />

artless than Ihn Qami'a.'"<br />

<strong>Ibn</strong> Ishaq continued, "<strong>The</strong>n Abii Sufyiin called out, 'Some mutilation was<br />

done to your men. I swear this nei<strong>the</strong>r pleased nor angered me; I nei<strong>the</strong>r ordered<br />

nor forbad it.'<br />

"As Ahii Sufyan moved <strong>of</strong>f, he called out, 'We have an appointment with you<br />

next year, at Badr!'<br />

"<strong>The</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) told one <strong>of</strong> his men to reply, 'Say: "Yes <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is indeed an appointment we have with you."'"<br />

Ihn Ish?iq went on, "<strong>The</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) <strong>the</strong>n despatched 'Ali b.<br />

Abn Tdih saying, 'Follow after <strong>the</strong> enemy and see what <strong>the</strong>y do and plan. If<br />

<strong>the</strong>y lead <strong>the</strong>ir horses and ride <strong>the</strong>ir camels, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y will be heading for Mecca.<br />

If <strong>the</strong>y ride <strong>the</strong> horses and lead <strong>the</strong> camels, <strong>the</strong>y will be heading for Medina. By<br />

Hi in whose hands is my soul, if <strong>the</strong>y head for Medina, I'll fight <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>re<br />

and annihilate <strong>the</strong>m!'<br />

"'Ali said, 'So I followed <strong>the</strong>m to see what <strong>the</strong>y would do; <strong>the</strong>y led <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

horses and rode <strong>the</strong>ir camels and headed for Mecca."'<br />

An Account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prayers that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Prophet</strong> ($AAS)<br />

spoke afrer <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> Uhud.<br />

Imxm Ahmad stated that Marwan h. Mu'awiya al-Fmri related to him, quoting<br />

'Ahd al-Wshid h. Ayman al-Makki, from Ihn Rifxca al-Zurqi, from his<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r, who said, "When <strong>the</strong> poly<strong>the</strong>ists withdrew after <strong>the</strong> battle <strong>of</strong> Uhud, <strong>the</strong><br />

Messenger <strong>of</strong> God (SAAS) said, 'Stand up, so that I may give praise to my Lord,<br />

Almighty and Glorious is He.' <strong>The</strong> Muslims assembled behind hi in ranks<br />

and he <strong>the</strong>n said, '0 God, to You is due all praise. 0 God, <strong>the</strong>re is no grasping<br />

what You have dispersed, nor dispersing what You grasp. <strong>The</strong>re is no guiding<br />

aright those whom You have led astray, nor any leading astray <strong>of</strong> those You have<br />

guided. <strong>The</strong>re is no giving <strong>of</strong> what You have prevented, nor any prevention <strong>of</strong><br />

what You have given. <strong>The</strong>re is no drawing close what You have distanced, nor<br />

any distancing what You have drawn close. 0 God, spread forth Your blessings,<br />

Your mercy, Your generosity and Your favours upon us.<br />

"'0 God, I ask <strong>of</strong> You those enduring blessings that never change nor cease.<br />

0 God, I ask You for blessings at a time <strong>of</strong> deprivation, and security at a time <strong>of</strong><br />

fear.<br />

"'0 God, I seek refuge with You against <strong>the</strong> evil <strong>of</strong> what You have given us,<br />

as well as from <strong>the</strong> evil from which You have saved us.
