316 THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD
d-Darqutni related through Aba al-Aswad, the orphan of 'Urwa, and through
Matar al-Waraq, from 'Ikrima, from Ibn 'Ahhas, to the effect that the Messenger
of God (SAAS) married Maymana while halal.
He said, "And they interpreted the first version of the account from Ihn
'Abhas - that the Messenger of God (SAAS) was muhrim, 'in a ritual state', to
mean that it was in the holy month. As a poet said,
'They killed Ibn 'Affa, the Khalifa, when he was
muhrim and prayed; and I never saw the like of him
abandoned.-"
"That is, this occurred in the holy month."
I note that this interpretation is open to dispute, because the accounts from
Ihn 'Ahhas contrary to that predominate, especially since he said, "He manied
her while he was muhrim and consummated marriage with her when he was
hallil." This also occurred in the month of Dhii al-Qa'da, another holy month.
Muhammad b. Yahys al-Dhuhli stated that 'Ahd al-Razzaq related to him,
"Al-Thawri said to me, 'No attention should be paid to the words of the people
of Medina. 'Amr informed me, from Aha d-ShaCth%', from Ihn 'Ahhs, that the
Messenger of God (SAAS) married while muhrim."'
Aha 'Abd Allah stated that he told 'Abd al-Razzaq, "Snfyan related hoth
ahlidith from 'Amr, from Aha al-Shacth%', from Ihn 'Ahhas and Ibn Khnthaym,
from Sacid h. Juhayr, from Ihn 'Ahhas, who said, 'Yes; regarding the hadith of
Ihn Khaytham, he related it here' - meaning in al-Yaman. 'Regarding the hadith
of 'Amr, he related it there' -meaning in Mecca."
Both authors of the sahib collections included this tradition, from 'Amr h.
Dinar.
In the sahib collection of d-Bukhai, through d-Awzz'i, it states, "'A&' related
to us, from Ihn 'Abhs, that the Messenger of God (SAAS) married Maymiina
while muhrim." Sa'id b. al-Mussayyib stated, "Ihn 'Ahhas made a mistake, even
though she was his aunt; he did not marry her until after he had become halal."
Yonus stated, from Ibn Ishzq, "Baqiyya quoted Sa'id b. al-Musayyib as
having said, 'This 'Abd All* h. 'Ahhas claimed that the Messenger of God
(SAAS) married Maymiina whiie he was muhrim'. And he (Sa'id) went on to
relate what he had said. He (Sa'id) continued, 'However, when the Messenger of
God (SAAS) went on to Mecca, hoth the hills1, and the marriage were at the
same time. Ibn 'Abhas was confused about this."'
Muslim and the ah1 al-sunan related from lines of transmission from Yazid
b. al-Asamm alLCAmiri, from his aunt Muymiina, daughter of d-Haith, who
said, "The Messenger of God (SAAS) married me while we were hoth haliil, at
Saraf." However, al-Tirmidhi stated, "Several authorities related this hadith
80. This refers to the assassination of Wthmn; his death is said to have come whiie he was in
prayer.
81. The state of being halal.
