crop damage from frost occurs when the temperature drops unexpectedly in early<br />

spring. Just-opened flower buds <strong>and</strong> young seedlings are most vulnerable. Growers<br />

obtain premium prices if they have produce available for sale early in the season.<br />

Rather than waste time, many growers prefer to take the risk to plant early <strong>and</strong> adopt<br />

a variety of strategies to minimize frost damage when it occurs. Such strategies include<br />

the following:<br />

1. Use frost forecast. USDA publications of maps <strong>and</strong> tables showing predicted<br />

patterns of frost occurrence throughout the nation are available. These charts<br />

show average dates for the last killing frost (in spring <strong>and</strong> in fall), after which<br />
