TABLE 1
Type Categories for Plant Names. Types are based upon who is the author of the plant
name and who designates the type.
A. The original author or a name designates the type specimen
Holotype. One specimen or illustration used by the author or designated by him
as the nomenclatural type. Currently, the author must cite herbarium of
deposit.
Isotype. Any duplicate of the holotype; always a specimen.
Paratype. One or more specimens cited by the original author but not designated
as the holotype or isotype.
B. The original author does not designate a type, but cites one or more voucher
collections.
Syntype. Any one of two or more specimens cited by the author in the
protologue when no holotype was designated, or any one of two or
more specimens simultaneously designated as types.
C. Type specimen designated by a later author, not the original author of a name.
Lectotype. A specimen or illustration selected by a subsequent author from the
original material to serve as the nomenclatural type when no holotype
was indicated at the time of publication of the name, or when the
holotype is missing, or when holotype belongs to more than one taxon.
[Most common type as historical authors didn’t designate types].
Neotype A specimen or illustration selected to serve as nomenclatural type
providing that all material on which the name of the taxon was based
is missing.
