Both studies utilized a variety <strong>of</strong> location techniques: observation <strong>of</strong><br />

street hustling activities, personal contacts <strong>of</strong> a gay ethnographer, chain<br />

referrals (Biernacki <strong>and</strong> Waldorf 1981; Watters <strong>and</strong> Biernacki 1989), <strong>and</strong><br />

telephone solicitation <strong>of</strong> telephone numbers listed for call men,<br />

model/escorts, <strong>and</strong> erotic masseurs. <strong>The</strong> study also employed former sex<br />

workers, gay <strong>and</strong> lesbian interviewers who had good contacts in sex work<br />

<strong>and</strong> gay communities. Transvestite/transsexuals were interviewed by<br />

female interviewers, a tactic that facilitated the development <strong>of</strong> rapport.<br />

All respondents were screened with a questionnaire that asked questions<br />

about the length <strong>of</strong> time they had worked as sex workers <strong>and</strong> the number<br />

<strong>of</strong> clients they had served during the previous 6 months. In general, the<br />

typology <strong>of</strong> various types <strong>of</strong> sex workers served as a theoretical overview<br />

<strong>and</strong> guide to locate sex workers for the study.<br />

In general, the studies were represented in the gay community by a gayidentified<br />

ethnographer who worked on the project for the full duration <strong>of</strong><br />
