General vocabulary activities – 2<br />

Finding nouns and adjectives<br />

Use this activity to help pupils identify new nouns and adjectives.<br />

Materials<br />

• board and chalk or small whiteboard and marker<br />

• reading passage with some unfamiliar words<br />

• paper<br />

• pencils<br />

1. Review nouns and adjectives with the pupils. Explain that a noun is a word that represents a person,<br />

place or thing. Explain that an adjective is a word that describes a person, place or thing.<br />

2. Write the following sentence on the board:<br />

The small tiger found a tasty treat to have <strong>for</strong> breakfast.<br />

3. Ask the pupils to find the people, places or things in the sentence (tiger, treat, breakfast).<br />

4. Then ask the pupils to find the words that describe these nouns (small, tasty).<br />

5. Distribute a reading passage <strong>for</strong> pupils to read.<br />

6. As the pupils read, have them search <strong>for</strong> words that are nouns or adjectives.<br />

7. Have them list these words on paper.<br />

8. Allow the pupils to share the words they found and discuss their meanings.<br />

Word wall game<br />

Here’s a fun game to play while creating a word wall in the classroom.<br />

Materials<br />

• paper squares or index cards • marker • pins<br />

1. As your pupils identify new vocabulary words, use a marker to write them on paper squares or index<br />

cards.<br />

2. Pin the word cards to the wall and review the pronunciations and meanings frequently.<br />

3. Periodically play a word wall game to make word learning fun.<br />

4. Secretly select a word from the wall (<strong>for</strong> example, elevate) and tell the pupils a riddle about it,<br />

such as:<br />

Viewing sample<br />

This word means to raise up.<br />

This word rhymes with renovate.<br />

5. Continue in this manner with other words on the word wall.<br />
