Fluency Fluency chart instructions Use the information below to assist you when completing the fluency chart on page 73. Photocopy sufficient copies for all the pupils in the class. Passage—Record the passage that the pupil read (i.e. the book, magazine or text). Fluency—Record the pupil’s ability to read smoothly, quickly, accurately and with expression. Comment on the pupil’s fluency according to the descriptions below. Smooth reading: Listen as the pupil reads the passage. Pay attention to the manner in which the pupil reads. Viewing sample Pupil’s comments: This portion of the chart is important to complete because it encourages selfevaluation. After the pupil reads the passage, ask him/her the questions below and record pertinent responses. How do your feel about the way you read the passage? • Was the passage difficult for you? • Was your reading choppy or smooth? • Did you read slowly or at a quick pace? • Did you make many mistakes? • How do you feel about your use of expression?
