General fluency activities – 5<br />
Get ready to read<br />
To ensure that fluency practice is productive, encourage pupils to read text passages be<strong>for</strong>e they come to<br />
reading group time.<br />
Material<br />
• reading passage that will be featured during group time<br />
1. Be sure that pupils know what text will be used during group reading time.<br />
2. Allow pupils time to review this text ahead of time. Encourage them to focus on reading with<br />
accuracy and expression and seek assistance with reading unknown words.<br />
3. Explain to the pupils that by practising the passage be<strong>for</strong>e coming to the reading group, they will<br />
have an easier time reading smoothly and also paying attention to the meaning of the passage.<br />
Fluency demonstration<br />
Draw pupils’ attention to the elements of fluent reading.<br />
Materials<br />
• reading materials (such as big books and poetry)<br />
1. Demonstrate the difference between choppy reading and smooth reading.<br />
2. Ask the pupils which <strong>for</strong>m of reading is more pleasing to the ear.<br />
3. Show the pupils how to pause when a comma is encountered.<br />
4. Demonstrate the difference between reading in a monotone voice and reading with expression.<br />
5. Draw attention to the tone of your voice as you read.<br />
6. Demonstrate the way the voice can change to match the personality of a character when reading<br />
dialogue.<br />
7. Be sure to make reading materials available, such as big books and poetry, so pupils can practise<br />
reading independently or with partners during free time.<br />
