Reading aloud to pupils never ceases to be an important activity. In fact, pupils will learn to read with
better fluency if they hear others reading smoothly, accurately and with expression. Use the following
tips to guide daily read-aloud time.
Read aloud to pupils everyday.
Select chapter books to read so pupils will have ongoing interest in longer stories.
Try to select books with interesting characters.
Use expression that matches each character’s personality.
Engage the pupils in the story by periodically asking questions about the story. Be sure not to go
overboard with questioning, as the pupils should be allowed to enjoy the fluent reading of the story.
Again and again
When pupils are given the opportunity to read passages several times, they increase their fluency. Fluency
improves even more when pupils listen to fluent readers and then repeat the same passages. Remember
that when working on fluency, pupils should be reading passages at or slightly below their reading levels.
Materials
• short passages at appropriate reading levels for pupils
1. Begin by explaining to the pupils that reading smoothly is an important skill.
2. Select a passage of text to read aloud to the pupils. Read in a choppy manner, pausing between
words.
3. Ask the pupils to respond to the way you read the passage. Was it easy to understand? Was it
enjoyable to listen to?
4. Tell the pupils that they will have the opportunity to listen to you read and then repeat the reading to
practise fluency.
5. Begin by allowing the pupils to look through the passage and read it silently.
6. Then read aloud the first two sentences and have the pupils read it aloud afterward. Continue in this
manner through the entire passage of text.
7. Draw pupils’ attention to the way they are able to read smoothly when copying you.
