Audio-assisted reading activities – 1
Record-listen-record
Help your pupils increase their fluency using the following activity.
Materials
• reading passage at independent reading level
• audio recorder with headphones
• CD player
1. Instruct a pupil to practise reading a text passage that is at his or her independent reading level.
2. After practising, the pupil records his or her reading of the passage.
3. Then the pupil listens to the recording through headphones while following along with the passage.
4. Encourage the pupil to pay attention to his or her reading rate, accuracy and smoothness of reading.
5. After reviewing the recording, the pupil records the passage again to try to make improvements.
Audio books
Many children’s books are available on CD. These books are often accompanied by the printed forms of the
books. You can also record your own books for pupils.
Materials
• audio recording of a children’s book
• printed form of the book
• CD player
• headphones
1. Set up a listening centre with a CD player and headphones.
2. At the centre, a pupil plays the CD and follows along in the book as the narrator reads.
3. Remind the pupil to pay attention to the smooth way in which the narrator reads and the expression
in the narrator’s voice.
4. Provide different kinds of audio books for the pupils to enjoy. The more examples of smooth,
accurate reading a pupil experiences, the better he or she will learn to read fluently.
