Specific word instruction activities – 4<br />
Freeze!<br />
This game will help pupils learn new vocabulary words.<br />
Materials<br />
• copy of page 112 • index cards<br />
• scissors • glue<br />
1. Photocopy and cut apart the cards on page 112.<br />
2. Glue each word card to an index card <strong>for</strong> durability.<br />
3. Choose five pupils to select one word card each.<br />
4. Each pupil thinks of a way to represent the word in a pose. For example, with the word skyscraper,<br />
the pupil might stand tall with his or her arms overhead.<br />
5. To play the game, have the other classmates sit in a circle.<br />
6. The five selected pupils walk around inside the circle.<br />
7. Say the word, ‘Freeze!’<br />
8. The pupils in the circle freeze in the pose that represents the word.<br />
9. Ask the classmates to guess each pupil’s word be<strong>for</strong>e the actor shows them the word card.<br />
10. If the pupils have difficulty guessing the word, they can say, ‘Unfreeze’.<br />
11. At this point, the pupil begins to move to act out the word.<br />
12. Continue in this manner, selecting five new pupils <strong>for</strong> the remaining five words.<br />
Guess my word<br />
This guessing game helps pupils practise their word knowledge.<br />
Materials<br />
• list of recently introduced vocabulary words • marker • paper<br />
1. Write the selected vocabulary words on paper.<br />
2. Select a pupil to begin the game.<br />
3. The pupil chooses a word from the list and then creates a clue. The clue should include an antonym,<br />
synonym or definition of the word.<br />

Example <strong>for</strong> the word beautiful:<br />
I’m thinking of a word that is a synonym <strong>for</strong> pretty.<br />
I’m thinking of a word that is an antonym <strong>for</strong> ugly.<br />
4. Allow pupils to guess the word.<br />
5. The pupil who guesses the word correctly gives the next clue.<br />
