Summarising activities – 1
Summarising information
This activity helps pupils summarise information.
Materials
• paper
• pencils
1. Begin by asking each pupil to think about a movie he/she has recently seen.
2. Ask, ‘If someone asked you to tell them about the movie, would you tell every single detail that
happens?’
3. Point out that when we tell a shortened version of what happens, we are giving a summary. A
summary only covers the most important parts of the story.
4. Explain that a summary includes the main idea of the story and a few important details.
5. Instruct each pupil to write a story about a recent event. This story can have as much detail as
desired.
6. Divide pupils into pairs and have them read their stories aloud to each other.
7. Instruct each partner to write a summary of the story using just a few sentences (no more
than four).
8. Have partners share their summaries and compare the summaries to the original stories.
