Phonemic awareness
Phoneme categorisation activities
Phoneme categorisation is the ability to recognise words that sound the same and different.
Which word doesn’t belong?
1. For this activity, pupils will be asked to identify the word in a set of three that does not sound the
same as the others.
2. Say the words bun, fun and cake. Ask the pupils to identify which word does not belong.
3. Ask the pupils to explain why the word is different. Try this activity with rhyming words as well as
with words that have the same and different beginning and ending sounds.
4. To make the activity more challenging, have the pupils listen for similar and different blends. See
below for sample word groups.
Sound categorisation
This learning centre activity provides pupils with ongoing practice in categorising sounds in words.
Materials
• cards on pages 7–8 • scissors • resealable plastic bags
1. Have the pupils practise phoneme categorisation in a learning centre.
2. Photocopy the cards on pages 7–8 and cut them out.
3. Colour the cards and laminate them for durability.
4. Create sets of three cards. Place each set in a resealable plastic bag. Place the bags at the learning
centre.
5. To play, a pupil takes the cards out of a bag, reads the words and determines which have the same
sounds and which word is different.
6. Have the pupil identify how the words are the same and different.
7. The pupil continues in this manner with each set of words. Encourage pupils to work together to
assess one another’s progress.
