General vocabulary activities – 3<br />

Word introduction<br />

When introducing new stories to the pupils, it is important to help pupils understand words that are<br />

unfamiliar.<br />

Materials<br />

• children’s book • marker<br />

• strips of paper<br />

1. Be<strong>for</strong>e introducing a new book to pupils, read through it to identify words that might be difficult <strong>for</strong><br />

them to pronounce or understand. (Choose no more than eight words.)<br />

2. Write each word on a strip of paper.<br />

3. Then, write the definition of each word on a separate strip of paper.<br />

4. Finally, write a sentence using each word on separate strip of paper.<br />

5. Gather pupils in a small group and introduce them to the vocabulary words.<br />

6. Ask the pupils if they know any of the words.<br />

7. Then display each strip with a sentence on it. Read the sentences aloud and ask the pupils if they are<br />

able to define the vocabulary words based on how they are used in sentences.<br />

8. Finally, show the pupils the definition strips and ask the pupils to match the definitions to the words<br />

they attempted to define.<br />

Vocabulary presentations<br />

This activity involves pupils defining new words.<br />

Materials<br />

• children’s book • pencils<br />

• paper • dictionary (optional)<br />

1. In a small group, have pupils work together to help one another learn new words.<br />

2. Provide pupils with a book.<br />

3. Ask each pupil to skim through the book to locate two or three words that might be unfamiliar to<br />

their group members.<br />

4. When each pupil has identified two or three words, have him or her try to determine each word’s<br />

meaning using context, a dictionary or adult assistance.<br />

5. Then the pupil writes a new sentence using the word correctly.<br />

6. Finally, have each pupil present his or her words, definitions and sentences to the other pupils in the<br />

group.<br />
