General vocabulary activities – 3
Word introduction
When introducing new stories to the pupils, it is important to help pupils understand words that are
unfamiliar.
Materials
• children’s book • marker
• strips of paper
1. Before introducing a new book to pupils, read through it to identify words that might be difficult for
them to pronounce or understand. (Choose no more than eight words.)
2. Write each word on a strip of paper.
3. Then, write the definition of each word on a separate strip of paper.
4. Finally, write a sentence using each word on separate strip of paper.
5. Gather pupils in a small group and introduce them to the vocabulary words.
6. Ask the pupils if they know any of the words.
7. Then display each strip with a sentence on it. Read the sentences aloud and ask the pupils if they are
able to define the vocabulary words based on how they are used in sentences.
8. Finally, show the pupils the definition strips and ask the pupils to match the definitions to the words
they attempted to define.
Vocabulary presentations
This activity involves pupils defining new words.
Materials
• children’s book • pencils
• paper • dictionary (optional)
1. In a small group, have pupils work together to help one another learn new words.
2. Provide pupils with a book.
3. Ask each pupil to skim through the book to locate two or three words that might be unfamiliar to
their group members.
4. When each pupil has identified two or three words, have him or her try to determine each word’s
meaning using context, a dictionary or adult assistance.
5. Then the pupil writes a new sentence using the word correctly.
6. Finally, have each pupil present his or her words, definitions and sentences to the other pupils in the
group.
