Comprehension
Generating questions activities – 2
Stranger interviews
Materials
• children’s story • copies of page 155 • pencils
1. In this activity, pupils will ask and answer questions as if they were characters in the story.
2. Begin by having pupils read the same story. Ask pupils to imagine that they were able to be in the
setting of the story, observing (but not participating in) the story events.
3. Ask the pupils: Which events do you think were interesting? Which events or actions are confusing?
Is there one character that is particularly interesting to you? What questions would you like to ask
this character? What questions would you like to ask other characters in the story?
4. On page 155, have each pupil write questions to ask a character of choice.
5. Once pupils have completed their question sheets, invite them to volunteer to be selected characters
in the story.
6. Instruct a pupil to pretend to be a character as another pupil asks questions from his or her sheet.
7. Encourage the pupil in character
to answer the questions as if he
or she is really that character. See
the example to the right from
Charlotte’s web:
Interviewer: Charlotte, why do you like Wilbur so much?
Charlotte: He is so innocent and has a good heart.
Interviewer: Does Wilbur ever frustrate you?
Charlotte: Yes, he does. He is always so worried.
