Pupils use this graphic organiser to analyse a story character.
Materials
• children’s books • pencils
1. Explain to pupils that they will analyse a story character in as much detail as possible, depending on
the information provided in the story.
2. Each pupil selects a children’s book and identifies the main character.
3. Distribute copies of the character biography organiser on page 146 to complete.
5. Then the pupil records three personality traits, three of the character’s actions and three things the
character likes or dislikes.
Analogy organiser
This organiser encourages critical thinking.
Materials
• children’s books • pencils • Analogy ideas on page 148
• copies of the Analogy organiser on page 147
1. Teaching pupils to make analogies is easier to do by providing demonstrations such as:
bib is to baby as napkin is to adult
2. Explain that a baby uses a bib to keep clothes from getting dirty and an adult uses a napkin for the
same reason.
3. Provide pupils with the following example:
Viewing sample
house is to person as
is to bird
4. Allow pupils to offer suggestions. Then draw their attention to the fact that a person lives in a house
and a bird lives in a nest.
5. Distribute copies of the analogy organiser on page 147 to each pupil. Explain that they will complete
analogies related to selected stories and characters. (See page 148 for analogy ideas.)
