Questioning strategies<br />
Questioning pupils about their understanding of a story is something most educators do, but the kind of<br />
questions asked is extremely important. Some questions only require pupils to repeat in<strong>for</strong>mation, while<br />
other questions require pupils to think critically. The list below provides questioning strategies and<br />
discussion starters to use effectively to monitor pupils’ comprehension.<br />
Knowledge<br />
• What events do you recall from the story?<br />
• What traits do you remember about the main character?<br />
Comprehension<br />
• Describe the story setting. • What is the main idea of the story?<br />
• Compare two characters in the story.<br />
Application<br />
• What conclusion can be drawn about …? • Why do you think the character did that?<br />
• What evidence is given about …? • Write an example of …<br />
Analysis<br />
• What do you think will happen next? • What causes that to happen?<br />
Synthesis<br />

Use the organiser on page 152 to assist pupils in generating questions.<br />
Materials<br />
• copies of page 152 • pencils • children’s books<br />
1. Distribute a copy of page 152 to each pupil. Discuss each type of question.<br />
2. The pupil writes the title of the book in the centre.<br />
3. Then the pupil writes a question <strong>for</strong> each section on the organiser.<br />
4. Encourage pupils to pair up to ask and answer questions.<br />
