Fluency
Parent letter
Dear Parent
We are working on the improvement of reading fluency. Fluency refers to
the ability to read smoothly, quickly, accurately and with expression. You can
assist your child with fluency at home in several ways:
1. Read, read, read. It is important for you to read aloud to your child. It’s
good for them to read to you, but it is still very important for him/her to
hear examples of good reading. So go to the library, pick out a great
book and enjoy reading aloud to your child.
2. Take turns. When reading aloud with your child, take turns reading the
text. You can alternate reading different sentences and paragraphs or
you can read a sentence and have your child repeat you by reading
the same sentence. Allowing them to copy the way you read will assist
in the improvement of fluency.
3. Be expressive. Model for your child how to read with expression. Your
child is learning to read basic text with expression, as well as using
different expression when characters in the story have dialogue. As
they improve expression, you’ll notice reading that is smooth and
pleasing to the ear.
4. Encourage practice. The purpose of fluency practice is to increase
the manner in which your child reads. In order to do this effectively, it is
necessary to allow them to rehearse the reading of a book or passage.
By doing this, he/she will be able to focus on speed, accuracy and
expression, rather than on working out unfamiliar words.
Your participation with fluency development is greatly appreciated. Happy
reading!
Sincerely
