Fluency
Assessment
Reading level calculation
According to Put reading first (2001, p. 29), correct words per minute can be calculated using the formula
explained below.
Materials
• two reading passages at an appropriate level • copy of Fluency graph on page 89
• stopwatch or clock with second hand
1. Select two passages of text.
2. Have a pupil read the passage for one minute.
3. Count the number of words the pupil read in one minute.
4. Determine the number of words read incorrectly.
5. Repeat the steps above with the second passage.
6. Determine the average number of words read incorrectly per minute.
7. Subtract the number of errors from the total number of words read to determine the words correct
per minute (WCPM).
8. Repeat this process a few times during the school year to assess each pupil’s progress.
The fluency chart on page 88 can be used as a guideline for average fluency goals.
9. Use the graph on page 89 to record pupil progress.
Average fluency goals
• 60 WCPM = end of Year 1 • 114 WCPM = end of Year 3
