Prefixes<br />

1. Write the following words on the board:<br />
clear read like<br />
2. Ask pupils to define each word. Then add a prefix to each word.<br />
unclear reread dislike<br />
3. Ask the pupils to compare the base words to the words with prefixes and explain how the words<br />
changed when the prefixes were added.<br />
4. Distribute small dictionaries to pairs of pupils and ask them to find words in the dictionary that begin<br />
with the ‘un-’ prefix. Instruct each pair to make a list of all the words they find where ‘un-’ is used as<br />
a prefix.<br />
5. Then have each pair of pupils define the words on the list.<br />
6. For more practice with prefixes, have pupils complete page 58.<br />
Synonyms and antonyms<br />
Materials<br />
• copies of pages 59–60<br />
Photocopy pages 59–60. Laminate and cut up the puzzle pieces. Explain to pupils that synonyms are<br />
words that have the same or almost the same meaning, such as smile/grin. Antonyms are words that have<br />
opposite meanings, such as good/bad. Show pupils that the puzzle pieces will fit together when the<br />
synonyms and the antonyms are matched.<br />

Write the words below on the board.<br />

Make the pupils aware that each set of words is pronounced the same, but spelt differently. The meanings<br />
are also different. These are homophones. Have pupils practise using homophones by completing page<br />
61.<br />
