Vocabulary
Synonym and antonym activities
Synonyms
This game helps your pupils practise identifying synonyms.
Materials
• board and chalk or small whiteboards and markers
• scissors • synonym cards on pages 92–93
• resealable plastic bag
1. Write the words keep, save and give on the board.
2. Ask the pupils to identify the two words that have similar meanings (keep and save). Explain that
these two words are synonyms (they mean the same or almost the same).
3. Ask pupils to think of other words that are synonyms. Write these words on the board.
4. Have pupils practise matching synonyms by making a concentration learning centre game.
5. Photocopy and cut apart the word cards on pages 92–93; store them in a plastic bag.
6. To play, a pupil places the cards facedown on a flat surface. The pupil turns over two cards at a time.
If the words are synonyms, they are set aside. If they are not synonyms, they are turned facedown
again.
7. Play continues until all synonyms have been matched.
Antonyms
Your pupils will have fun playing an antonym game.
Materials
• board and chalk or whiteboard and markers • pencils
• paper • scissors • antonym cards on pages 94–95
1. Write the words wet and dry on the board. Draw attention to the fact that these words are antonyms
(they have opposite meanings).
2. Ask the pupils to think of as many antonyms as possible and then write them on paper. Allow the
pupils to share their words.
3. Photocopy and cut apart the antonym cards on pages 94–95.
. 4. To play, each of two players receives four cards. If a pupil has any words that are antonyms of each
other, they make a match and set those aside.
5. In turn, each pupil asks for a card. For example, ‘Do you have a word that is the antonym of cold?’
6. If the pupil has the card, he or she hands over the card. If the pupil does not have it, he or she says,
‘Go fish’.
