在
《 品 位 》 雜 誌 工 作 的 日 常 中 , 我 們 時 常 會 考 慮 一
個 問 題 , 什 麼 是 真 正 的 「 奢 侈 」? 這 個 詞 經 常 出
現 在 我 們 採 訪 的 人 物 口 中 , 我 們 選 擇 的 事 物 的 定
位 中 。 也 許 大 多 數 人 會 將 奢 侈 簡 單 的 定 義 為 昂 貴 , 但 隨 著 越 來
越 多 地 接 觸 到 這 些 昂 貴 的 事 物 , 我 們 越 認 為 這 裏 的 昂 貴 並 不 是
表 面 地 體 現 在 金 錢 上 。
許 多 人 之 所 以 選 擇 奢 侈 品 , 是 因 為 覺 得 它 們 物 有 所 值 。 這
種 價 值 體 現 在 一 絲 不 苟 的 選 材 , 工 匠 們 代 代 傳 承 的 精 湛 工 藝 ,
以 及 對 品 質 精 益 求 精 的 追 求 , 當 然 還 有 其 中 所 蘊 涵 的 深 邃 文 化
中 。 它 們 的 美 是 經 得 起 時 間 考 驗 的 , 是 會 讓 人 們 沉 醉 其 中 , 願
意 去 珍 惜 的 。
例 如 , 在 法 國 著 名 稻 桿 鑲 嵌 藝 術 家 Lison de Caunes 手 中 ,
不 起 眼 的 稻 草 也 可 以 化 身 為 奢 侈 品 。 當 她 用 最 挑 剔 的 眼 光 , 選
擇 出 此 時 唯 一 適 合 她 作 品 的 那 根 稻 草 , 將 它 細 細 撫 平 、 上 色 、

法 國 頂 級 水 晶 品 牌 Lalique, 他 們 在 法 國 蘇 特 恩 地 區 新 進 打 造 了
一 處 酒 店 , 由 一 座 有 著 四 百 年 歷 史 的 酒 莊 翻 建 而 成 。 酒 店 內 部
裝 飾 的 華 麗 水 晶 製 品 在 久 遠 歷 史 的 輝 映 之 下 , 也 散 發 出 了 不 同
以 往 的 奢 華 感 。
而 來 自 溫 哥 華 的 燈 具 設 計 師 Maurice Dery, 選 擇 逆 潮 流 而
上 , 在 處 處 提 倡 極 簡 主 義 的 今 天 , 他 以 藝 術 大 師 達 芬 奇 的 理 論
為 靈 感 , 用 極 盡 可 能 的 複 雜 機 械 工 藝 打 造 出 獨 一 無 二 的 燈 具 系
列 。 他 說 這 套 耗 費 他 三 、 四 個 月 時 間 打 造 而 成 的 燈 具 , 背 後 是
他 四 十 年 從 業 經 驗 的 凝 結 , 這 其 中 的 價 值 又 該 如 何 去 衡 量 呢 ?

At Taste of Life, we feature products and experiences
that fall into the category of “luxury.” In this edition, we
decided to look at what “luxury” truly means.
The dictionary definition gives the impression that it’s about
frivolous and even foolish indulgence. I think it can feed vanity,
and it can be wasteful in some people’s hands. But, like many
things in life, it has both a negative and a positive side.
Luxury is about fine craftsmanship and quality in a world where
cheaply made goods are piling up in landfills. It’s about buying
an heirloom, something that will be treasured for a lifetime, for
generations.
It’s about living a life steeped in beauty and surrounded by
objects that have been made with great care — that have an
aura about them imparted by the craftsmen who put their
hearts into making them.
For Lison de Caunes, who makes artistic luxury products out
of the humble material of straw, luxury is about the magic an
artisan infuses into the object. The uniqueness of an artisanal
product makes it precious.
She says luxury is also about how something adds to a person’s
life. Luxuries bring beauty and joy to life, the same way music
does, and theatre, and so many other things that aren’t strictly
necessary to live.
Wedding planner Aly Armstrong tells us luxury isn’t about
the pricetag; it’s about the experience. “It’s about feeling good
about what I’m surrounded with,” she says. Aerin Lauder also
sees the luxury lover as someone who “appreciates the ultimate
in quality and sensorial richness.”
The story of Maurice Dery’s creation — the Da Vinci Collection
— reminds me that the money invested in luxury is like the
patronage given to history’s greatest artistic minds. While luxury
can come with a large price tag, that price often represents an
investment in our artists and artisans, in our world’s makers of
fine and beautiful things.
