浮 冰 開 裂 的 聲 音 , 應 該 距 離 此 地 很 遠 , 讓 我 不 必 這 麼 緊
張 。 但 我 的 腦 海 中 還 是 浮 現 出 暢 銷 書 作 家 David Grann 曾
說 過 的 , 南 極 洲 是 一 片 「 白 色 的 黑 暗 之 地 」。
除 了 一 些 零 散 的 科 學 考 察 站 之 外 , 南 極 洲 是 一 處 完 全
沒 有 人 類 痕 跡 的 旅 行 地 。 沒 有 星 級 酒 店 , 沒 有 購 物 中 心 和
餐 廳 , 甚 至 連 道 路 都 沒 有 。 回 想 此 行 之 前 , 我 曾 下 決 心 要 追
隨 像 Ernest Shackleton 那 樣 偉 大 探 險 家 的 腳 步 , 讓 自 己 此

whiteness. Aside from a few scattered science stations,
it’s practically untouched.
No roads, no gift shops, a historic purity. I see what
Ernest Shackleton and other great explorers saw, and
it gives me a more nuanced understanding of what it
means to explore the unknown, with its ever-present
subtext of risk. The inestimable reward for braving
that risk is dazzling, unearthly beauty. It is the most
transformative journey I have ever taken.
I have been to India, Tibet, Russia, Alaska, into the
Amazon rainforest, to New Zealand’s Milford Sound
fjord, and 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle. All of
these places affected me, but Antarctica has been the
most memorable.
In its surreal remoteness, Antarctica has been called
“the end of the world.” But to explorers, researchers, and
other visitors to this land, it’s a beginning. Arriving in
Antarctica is the start of a great adventure.
Among my fellow passengers on the Hurtigruten
Midnatsol cruise ship are scientists destined for research
outposts along the way. It isn’t your typical cruise ship
— it’s more intrepid, less about basking in luxurious
comforts. Each day during the two-week journey, we
put on our long underwear, sweaters, puff jackets, gloves,
high boots, and lifejackets, and board rigid inflatable
boats (RIBs) to explore islands and waterways.
